Mikel Hammarling
Name; Mikel Hammarling
Age; 41
Nationality; Swedish

Residence; Stockholm
Specialization; Director Sportif
My name is Mikel.
My name is Mikel. I was born in Linkoping in June 1973. Thats were the whole family lived at the time.
I started off as a decent national level Cyclo-Cross rider. I rode for a few trade teams across Scandinavia from when i was 18 until is was 27. My career was cut short by injury caused by a crash. I may tell you about it at another time.
After that i became a journalist for some Swedish papers, before moving to the continent in 2000.
I currently live back in Stockholm, even if i do spend large chunks of the year abroad for work.
My brother also rode at a national level on the road for 10 years, and my young nephew has recently started his cycling career.
Cycling is in the blood.
How did i get to Orica-GreenEdge?
As i said. I rode cyclo-cross for just under 10 years. Then i became a journalist for several Swedish papers. I did mostly sporting events, and some other current events.
In 2000 i moved to France to write for L'Equipe. Yes i speak very good french, for some reason. I worked at L'Equipe for 12 years, and have covered almost all events in cycling across the world.
Whilst covering Le Tour in 2011 i met Shayne Bannan. We had a laugh and became friends.
I wrote several exclusives about Orica in 2012. He liked them a lot. When he found out about my career and family of cycling, he offered my the role of DS for 2013.
What next?
This will be my first time as true DS. I'll hope to give you a great insight into the workings and life of a WT teams and a DS.
I dont know the teams goals yet, but i'd just like to not make a tit of myself to be honest.
This will be a trial year. I wont get any massive races but enough to learn. I'll be aiming to get a contract for 2014.
I will also keep you updated on the teams results, and my nephews who i'm very proud of.

That is a very nice squad, good luck!

Quite an unusual name for a Swede, I must say. Never met anyone here named Mikel.
Anyway, best of luck!

5th January 2013
"Here I Go Again On My Own"
My first blog of the season! Quite exciting.
The team was presented in Sydney on the 3rd, and few days ago. I wasn't present but did make a Skype appearance. It all seemed to go off well, everyone had fun and things look good for the season.
Of course the Aussie's are down preping for the NC's and the TDU in a couple of days time. I wish them luck, and will of course report the action and results for you. We are expected to win both events, and judging by how the winter for them went that should be easy.
I will spend the second half of January and most of February working with the rest of the team, training and team bonding. It will be the first time i get to spend with the riders so i hope we can get on.
My personal calendar has been issued, and i've posted it above. Lots of great races!
Beginning at the end of February in Spain and ending in France in mid October. Highlights include The Ardennes Classics, Tour of Poland, Eneco Tour and Il Lombardia.
Shayne is showing a lot of faith by giving me these big races, and i will do my best to deliver. It does show though that i dont get a GT or any non-European races. But i'm very excited.
I'll give you a full report from our early training, which is happening on Corsica and Sardinia. Nice weather and great roads. Looking forward to it a lot.
So until then, this is me signing off.
Mikel
