Welcome to France! Strasbourg will host a stage start in the Tour de France later this year and will stage the start of the Tour de Suisse. Strasbourg is just inside France, close to the border of Germany, and the route runs down that borderline until reaching Switzerland, passing through Basel and ending in Soleure.
The favourites for todays stage are a real international bunch. Robbie Hunter of South Africa, Borut Bozic of Slovenia, Mark Cavendish of Great Britain, Bernhard Eisel of Austria, Murilo Fischer of Brazil and Tomas Vaitkus of Lithuania.
3 riders attacked early on. Calcagni in the Swiss team (Riding in the jersey of Morocco), Wagner of the German team (Colours of Chocolaude Jacques) and Frederik Nolf of Telefonica.
They were never going to make it to the finish though and with just over 10km to the KoM points, Ardila, Ignatiev, Sanchez Gil and Van Avermaet attacked, they caught the 3 riders but were then all caught 2km before the KoM points. Ardila and Ignatiev attacked again but it is a frenchman who took the jersey.
The sprinters then received an early opportunity to trade blows as 25km before the finish, there is an intermediate sprint, in which Eisel just about won.
Come the final sprint there were 2 trains, on the right was one featuring Fischer, Baumann and Steels, while on the right was a Carlsberg led train of Marzoli > Eisel > Vatikus > Cavendish > Castaneda > Carrara > Hunter. Im not sure how Carrarra pushed infront of Hunter but the Italian really isnt a rider capable of winning today and has managed to effectively wreck the South Africans day.
Going into 1km to go, Baumann, Fischer, Vaitkus and Eisel were all line astern with Cavendish just starting to make his move and a slight bit behind them. Cavendish darted through the middle, straight past the other 4 to win!!!!
