A French guy has made this training schema which shows the effects of training. The horizontal table shows the stats (flat, mountain, downhill, etc.), and the vertical table shows the training method (fighter, puncheur, stage races, etc.). In between, you see numbers ranging from 0 (least important) to 3 (most important). So, for example, if you train a rider in stage races, his recuperation and mountain skill are the skills which are trained the most.

Flat, mountain, downhill, cobbels, TT, sprint, accerelation, andurace, resistance, recuperation, hills, attack
Vertical:
Attacker, hilly classics, stage racer, sprinter, TT’er, cobbel classics, climber
A lot are pretty much the same but I hope this helped you

Okay... looking at those grids I see the following:
1. There really isn't much of a reason to train Climber instead of Stage Races. The only difference between the two is 1 more point in Fighter and 2 more in acceleration, and one less in TT, End and REcup for climbers. With acceleration being devalued somewhat, I think I'm switching all my guys training on climber to stage.
2. There's no way to increase downhill. That's annoying.
3. I'm leaning a bit toward changing all my guys training as a fighter to northern classics. Again... with some devaluation of acceleration it wouldn't hurt to lose those points too much. The loss of a point in fighter and flat might prevent a move in some cases but the additional resistance and endurance might make up for it in terms of fufilling the "fighter" role. It's a bit of a judgement call as cobs is as limited in use as ACC in a way (not many cob races).
And lastly... wouldn't it be great if the game let us develop custom training programs? 18 points to spread amongst the 12 skills , each one between 0-3.
My program:
The cobblestone time trialist (fills two specialties) -
Flat: 2
MTN: 0
DH: 1
Cob: 3
TT: 3
Sp: 1
ACC: 0
END: 3
Res: 2
Rec: 1
Hill: 1
Fight: 1
You could really build some cool specialist racers this way (you still can with what we have, but it requires a lot of switching between training programs) |

you can change the bonus structure of the training through an editor, if these don't satisfy you.
You could have a super training if you want which makes you awesome at everything
but that wouldn't be fun

Well I might replace the climber plan with something else... but I'll keep it to the 18 total points that all the others have. |

and considering that the acceleration stat is completely useless...

wouldn't be realistic in the slightest. people would just stack up all points on one skill, and that would be it.
usually a skil that is far more useful than all others, like Sprint or Mountain

TT and Northern classics only have 17 points each (unless I (and excel) suck at math) |
