After a relaxing stage 6 it's time for the 7th stage which is perfect for hilly riders since we have three steep hills at the end of the stage - maybe, Bettini will take his revenge today after his 2nd place yesterday?
The Domina Vacanze team seemed to want to control today's stage. The first couple of breakaway attempts were ruined by Domina Vacanze, and in the end they only allowed two riders to go -- those were Kocjan (AG2R) and Meier (Ferrari). However, Meier didn't really want to wait up for Kocjan, so instead they ended up being splitted with a permanent gap of 1'30 between them.
On the very first slightly uphill part a few riders surprisingly tried to attack: Iglinsky, Medina, Parra Pinto, Marzoli and Sartasov. These riders quickly catched the tired Kocjan, but once again Domina Vacanze quickly ended their dreams.
After Kocjan were catched, Gazetta Dello Sport decided to go to the front and do their job - and so they did. With 50 km to go it was over for Meier.
Obviously, that wasn't the only thing Gazetta had in their minds. Just slightly after, Maglia Rosa, Damiano Cunego, launches a surprise attack. Many of the favourites are caught in the middle of the peloton, unable to attack. The only one to respond is Ricco, but he can't follow Cunego.
The gap quickly increases to 1'31 to Cunego and 50 seconds to Ricco, and it seems like Ricco is getting closer to Cunego. After a few hills, and with just 15 km to go, it's clear that something drastic has to be done to catch them. The peloton has 1'50 to Ricco and 2'38 to Cunego.
5 km to go, and it's a clear victory for Cunego who'll lead the Giro with a large margin after this.
