The first mountain of this year's Giro appears on this 5th stage -- the Montevergine. Here we will probably see the GC-contenders fight it out for the first time. Who should we count on, who shouldn't we count on? One thing's for sure -- it's going to be interesting.

But, of course, there's no stage without a breakaway. Today's breakaway riders were Astarloa, Suazo, Quinziato and Redondo. One of the riders, Suazo, was obviously not interested in working with the other breakaway riders and rode away from them on the very first hill. Three of them reunited on the long flat part before the final mountain, and Meier (Ferrari) tried to get up to the group by attacking from the peloton. It was of no use, though - with 33 km to go, the adventyre is over, and the GC-riders can prepare themselves before the important mountain.

As soon as the peloton hit the steep part of the mountain, the first attacks are launched. They are useless, though. The Gazetta dello Sport-team is setting an incredibly hard pace, and the riders are dropping off like flies.

It doesn't take long before their energy has been used up, allowing some attacks. The first group of riders to get away are Garzelli, Paulinho, Cuapio, Gil and Pellizotti. However, the other contenders quickly realize how serious this is, especially after A. Schleck launches his attack. Cunego asks his team to stop relaying and launches a very powerful attack.

Sella manages to hang on for a few metres, before he has to let go. At this point there's only three kilometers to go. Behind Sella, there's a big group of favourites, trying to catch Cunego, but it seems to be too late. Cunego is definitely ready for this year's Giro.

And yes, it's a victory for Cunego! Behind him, Carrara (Ferrari) has managed to sprint up to Sella and has passed him! With Lars Boom long gone, this must mean that Cunego takes the jersey too.
