(Sorry to Carrefour for not using their shirt. It's used after this stage - promise )
This Giro seems to be full of drama, and the upcoming stage was no exception. However, let's start off with some "undrama" - no time gap was registered on yesterday's stage, meaning that none of the favourites lost time. It did - to me - seems like a very clear gap, but obviously the organizers didn't want to give away the victory to A. Schleck this early
However, other things happened today which will maybe have an influence. The stage today looks pretty much like yesterday's stage. It has two hills, like yesterday, but they are now placed closer to the finish line.
Today's breakaway consisted of 10 riders: Laidler, Boom, Coyot, Nardello, Vaugrenard, Anuawar, Hinault, Heijboer, Cummings and Lancaster. Behind them, Gardeyn and Mazur tried to bridge the gap, but they never managed to. Instead, the race went on slowly and with no action. With 100 km to go, the peloton had 7 minutes to catch -- which at this point seems very easy to catch.
Carlsberg, who managed to get Corioni in the Maglia Rosa yesterday, led the peloton and easily got time on the breakaway. However, that also meant that Cavendish had to let go of the peloton. He still seems to be hurt after his crash yesterday.
The breakaway wasn't as easy to catch as the peloton thought. In fact, the group wasn't caught until there were only 6 km to go -- and then they realized, they had a small problem. Lars Boom (Fed-Ex) had broken away from the breakaway group!
Also, because of the difficult chase there was (yet again) no organization between the teams. Just before the sprint, O'Grady came out of nowhere to support Corioni once again. As the sprint started, it was reported that mass crashes had happened further down in the peloton, but Corioni didn't care about that. He kept on going, but unfortunately for him, O'Grady wasn't up to the challenge today.
Instead, he had to fight with Bennati for the victory today - and in the end, Bennati was just the strongest today. Corioni took 2nd in front of Bettini and thereby he managed to protect his Maglia Rosa-jersey.
The crashes meant that Duarte (Ferrari) and Criel (Carrefour) had to withdraw, but it also meant that several favourites may have been injured. Perez Cuapio, A. Schleck, Caruso, Botero, Ricco and Savoldelli were some of the favourites who were down - they didn't lose time, but who knows how they feel tomorrow
Here's what caused the mass crash.
