Bolivia just have the two riders competing the much loved mountain goat Óscar Solis and the domestique Horacio Gallardo. Gallardo would be favoured on these parcours.
Brazil's position in the cycling world, as that of its standing in the economic world is rising. Best known as most South American nations are for their climbers such as Pedro Nicácio and Magno Nazaret, they do like Argentina have a few decent sprinters also like Carlos Alexandre Manarelli. Brazil's cycling cause has been further helped by that of Petrobrus opening up a team in division two. Though their year was fairly barren and team served mainly as a last port of call for veteran riders.
For all that build up we get a bit of a farce of a race as two riders form an escape in one of the Morandi twins Maurizio Morandi and Pedro Pablo Pereyra bursting clear.
This provides the perfect storm really with Petrobrus clearly happy with their lot, one of their best riders getting clear as they sit on the back of a multicoloured go slow.
The Argentineans also look fairly comfortable with the young Pereyra becoming the national champion as the lead just builds with absolutely no response. The embarressed officials look on in horror as the duo lap the others and Pereyra crosses the line first.
He will be the Argentine champion and Morandi with be the Brazilian champion as the rest of the pack cruise towards the finish.
The officials decide to embarress the riders slightly here by halting them some 5km from the finish. One of the Bolivian dignitories declares Gallardo the road race champion for 'finishing' ahead of Solis.
