Tour de l'Avenir 2012 - Stage 10
SportingNonsense
Mont Ventoux awaits. Ryan Eastman leads the race and is favourite to secure the title, but Paolo Scarponi won't go down without a fight. Can George Bennett, Carlos Betancourt, Peter Sagan or someone else also fight their way past Thibaut Pinot for the final podium spot?

Here is the break

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-2.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Berhane

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Skujins

Schwarmes and Zmorka each win an intermediate sprint, but this is the break again just after the start of Ventoux - lead at just a minute.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-3.jpg

Sure enough, they are caught. And as California Giant and Wikipedia control the pace, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.png Quintana attacks.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-4.jpg

His move only last a kilometre, but it has notably weaked the strength in depth of our pacing American squads.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-5.jpg

Quintana tries again but doesnt have the strength to get a gap this time - so i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Kirsch goes for it, the latest in the line of Luxembourg talents.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-6.jpg

Our Qatari KoM leader i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/eb.png Albourdainy has been dropped. He must now hope that Scarponi finishes outside of the Top 3 to at least share the jersey victory. Hopes seem slim.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-7.jpg

Kirsch didnt get away, but now i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Sagan attacks.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-8.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Scarponi followed and darts away into the distance. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Eastman does not attack, instead rides up to Sagan - bringing with him Pinot, Talansky and Betancourt

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-9.jpg

Kirsch, Kennaugh, Bennett, Reis, Elissonde and Quintana lead the chase. Shikai, Curfs, Simon and Ablenardo also with them.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-10.jpg

But Scarponi has flown the nest. His lead is up to 50 seconds, only a handful more and he is the virtual race leader!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-11.jpg

Kwiatkowski has fought his way back to the chasing chase group, as Kennaugh attacks it. 4th overall Bennett under pressure. Many attempts will be made by those in this group to attack each other up the climb, but for the most part, they stay together

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-12.jpg

Eastman, Pinot and Sagan have dropped Talansky and Betancourt, but struggle to make inroad to Scarponi's lead

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-13.jpg

But now Pinot attacks - is this the turning point?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-14.jpg

Eastman of course follows. Sagan is blown away.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-15.jpg

The gap is down to 20 seconds, but the American isnt done...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-16.jpg

He rides up to the wheel of Scarponi

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-17.jpg

And straight past!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-18.jpg

One thing is for certain now, Ryan Eastman is soon to be the Tour de l'Avenir champion.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-19.jpg

And there it is, let the celebrations begin

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-20.jpg
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-27.jpg

Credit must go to Scarponi, he did not sit back and accept 2nd - he attacked, and at one point it looked so good. He finishes 2nd on the stage in the end though, 34 seconds down.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-21.jpg

3rd for Pinot at 51 seconds. The overall podium is in stage order, and all 3 clearly deserve it. Of course, Scarponi will take the King of the Mountains jersey as a result of his 2nd place.

Peter Sagan rides home for 4th at 2'16. This gives him victory in the points classification - by just 3 points over Blythe. He could move up in GC too!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-22.jpg

Carlos Betancourt eventually takes 5th: 3'49 down. So Sagan has moved up to 4th in GC for sure.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-23.jpg

Talansky is 4'07 down, Kennaugh 4'14. Talansky would have surely been right in the Top 5 GC battle if not for his Stage 1 crash.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-24.jpg

Elissonde makes it 2 Frenchmen in the Top 8, at 4'33, with a group of 4 at 4'37: Quintana, Kirsch, Reis and Bennett, then Curfs tailed off slightly at 4'50 and Shikai at 4'59.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-25.jpg

Bennett falls 2 spots to 6th overall, while the rest of the Top 10 remains as Kennaugh, Reis, Shikai and Kirsch - with Curfs 11th.

Kwiatkowski started the day 12th, but struggled today. 6'02 behind Eastman, finishing with Simon, Ablenado and the German free agent Michel Koch.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir10-26.jpg

Delaplace, Dieteren, Kopp, Rowsell and Grmay are still to finish, but when they do, they secure their positions in the overall Top 20.
