Its the time trial
Looking at the Top 16 GC going into the stage, plenty of positions will change today.
1 Paolo Scarponi Wiggle - San Pellegrino 38h28'28 2 Carlos Betancourt Hollister + 28 3 Thibaut Pinot Wikipedia s.t. 4 Ryan Eastman California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized + 32 5 George Bennett Oz Cycling Project + 1'00 6 Peter Sagan Ferrari - ERG + 2'14 7 Rafael Reis Cerne + 2'43 8 Tim Kennaugh Festina - Conec + 2'53 9 Alex Kirsch Focused Cycling + 3'00 10 Michal Kwiatkowski Team B&O + 3'12 11 Kenny Elissonde Focused Cycling s.t. 12 Nairo Quintana Spyker Cars s.t. 13 Chen Shikai Meiji - Fuji s.t. 14 Ben Curfs Team Bpost + 3'19 15 Jan Dieteren Germany + 3'38 16 Anthony Delaplace Milka - Vittel s.t.
An earlier starter who is a good time trialist is the Greek rider Vlatos. He duly takes the early lead
1 Vlatos 48'12 2 De Bie + 19 3 Verona + 28 4 Predatsch + 38 5 Insausti + 48 6 Turek + 52 7 Arakelyan + 1'19 8 Palumbo + 1'40 9 McCarthy + 2'21 10 Cappannari + 2'22
He isnt the only early starter who can ride well against the clock though. Joseph Perrett goes 2nd.
And already Vlatos is out of the top spot - Moreno Moser beats him by 18 seconds.
1 Moser 47'53 2 Vlatos + 18 3 Perrett + 27 4 Balloni + 34 5 De Bie + 38 6 Fukata + 43 7 Verona + 47 8 Andersen + 48 9 Predatsch + 57 10 Insausti + 1'06
Next of note is Quaade. 2nd at the 2nd intermediate sprint - 8 seconds down.
But the Dane fades to 3rd at the finish, behind Vlatos at 21 seconds down.
Luke Durbridge timed his ride a bit better. 5th at that 2nd split, 13 seconds down improved to 4th at the finish and 18 seconds down - not quite beating Vlatos.
But next is Viennet and he is going strong. A slow start saw him 12 seconds down at the first split, but that is cut to 2 seconds at the 2nd split!
Can he beat Moser? No! Just 1 second shy.
Adam Blythe was outside the Top 10 at the first split, so not much attention was paid to him. Then he almost went and took the lead!
A powerful finish sees him take 3rd, just 2 seconds down. He doesnt need many Points to overtake Luke Rowe and take the Green jersey, this ride could have done just that
1 Moser 47'53 2 Viennet + 1 3 Blythe + 2 4 Vlatos + 18 5 Durbridge + 18 6 Quaade + 21 7 Perrett + 27 8 Zmorka + 32 9 Balloni + 34 10 De Bie + 38
We move into the GC contenders now though, and in style. Through the first checkpoint, Shikai has a 6 second lead!
He is certainly going to move into the GC Top 10 - but he can't keep up his fast start and fades to 4th at the finish, 5 seconds behind Moser
1 Moser 47'53 2 Viennet + 1 3 Blythe + 2 4 Shikai + 5 5 Vlatos + 18 6 Durbridge + 18 7 Quaade + 21 8 Howard + 22 9 Perrett + 27 10 Zmorka + 32
He has ridden much better than those around him in GC though, and will climb up to 9th overall.
20 Curfs + 43 28 Kwiatkowski + 51 29 Kirsch + 55 41 Quintana + 1'11 51 Elissonde + 1'34 58 Delaplace + 1'51 76 Dieteren + 2'18
Timothy Kennaugh is next. 2nd only to Shikai at the first split, but like Shikai, he can't keep ahead of Moser over the duration of the course. 5th place for him, 10 seconds down.
The pressure was on for Rafael Reis then, bttling Kennaugh for 7th. He also started well - equalling Moser's time - but surprise surprise, faded. He makes the Top 10 at the finish line, but will fall behind Kennaugh overall.
1 Moser 47'53 2 Viennet + 1 3 Blythe + 2 4 Shikai + 5 5 Kennaugh + 10 6 Vlatos + 18 7 Durbridge + 18 8 Quaade + 21 9 Howard + 22 10 Reis + 25
Peter Sagan was next, and rode at almost an identical place to Reis. He remains 6th, but is much closer to the Top 4 now as Betancourt and Bennett lost quite a bit of time today.
11 Sagan + 25 34 Bennett + 57 62 Betancourt + 1'50
Infact, Bennett's best achievement today was finishing ahead of the rider who started after him: Ryan Eastman
The American has charged around the course, and torn Moser's time to pieces. He takes the lead on the stage by 63 seconds!
Thibaut Pinot was next. Starting the day 4 seconds ahead of Eastman. No chance of keeping that, he loses 2'02 - but keeps 3rd place.
And finally, race leader Paolo Scarponi
Its actually a good ride by him to take 14th on the stage, but he has lost 1'34 to Eastman. No longer does he have a lead of 32 seconds - now it is a deficit of 1'02. Eastman was the race favourite and he has finally shown why, the stage and the race lead to him with one stage remaining.
Adam Blythe finished 4th on the stage in the end - quite impressive - and it gives him enough points to take the lead of the Points competition. Luke Rowe won't take that, despite 3 stage wins! Sagan could threaten Blythe tomorrow though.
