2 years since withdrawing from the sport due to a doping scandal, it appears that Xacobeo have had a change of heart and announced the return of the Xacobeo Galicia team for 2012.
Team Manager DavÃd Bravo has said that the team like the old one, was in place to help develop cycling in the Galician region, and for that reason the team would be made up of mostly young prospects from Galicia, with a few older, more established riders from outside Galicia to lead the team, here is the final roster of 12 riders;
We're starting out as a continental team, but we hope to become Pro-Continental in the next 2 years.
**My first ever story so please be patient with me!

@Sutty68 Yeah, but the next couple of stages are hilly so we're hoping to get more involved! |

Stage 3
Today the stage is hilly which makes most of our guys very happy, flat stuff is not our thing, we're looking to get a man in the break today and take the KoM jersey!
At the start of the race there were lots of attacks being made very early on, in danger of missing out again Ion Izagirre decides to react as there's no-one else up near the front for us.
Success! As he makes the break of the day with Vaitkus (Orica-Greenedge), Chalapud (Columbia Coldeportes), Rosendo (Andalucia) and Antunes (Carmim Prio) the peleton however didn't want to let this group get very far ahead so they only got a maximum of 4 minutes 40 ahead.
Ion misses out on the first KoM and both the sprints...
But redeems himself, taking the next 3 category 2 climbs, which guarantees him the KoM jersey for the next stage! GO ION!
A dangerous counter-attack including Barredo, Nicki Sorenson, Gatto and Sammy Sanchez gets away but Radioshack aren't too keen on letting these guys get away so they're not given more than a minute.
With about 20 km to go the dangerous counter-attack and the break are reeled in, and the high pace sees Ion, like the rest of his team mates dropped out the back, but he is not disappointed, a good GC finish may be gone but he has the KoM jersey at least.
After a few small digs from many riders, Eros Capecchi has a go over the top of the last climb and on the downhill he draws a massive 1 minute and a half on the 20 man group behind him to take the stage by 1.39 from Jonathan Hivert and Haimar Zubeldia, a brilliant win! Ion is the best of our finishers in 59th at 7.25 down on the winner Capecchi.
1) Eros Capecchi - Liquigas - 4h26'49
2) Jonathan Hivert - Saur-Sojasun - +1'39
3) Haimar Zubeldia - Radioshack - +1'39
4) Peter Sagan - Liquigas - +1'39
5) Xavier Florencio - Katusha - +1'39
6) Joaquim Rodriguez - Katusha - +1'39
7) Francis De Greef - Lotto Bellisol - +1'39
8) Matthias Frank - BMC - +1'39
9) Jens Voigt - Radioshack - +1'39
10) Stefano Garzelli - Acqua Sapone - +1'39
59) Ion Izagirre - Xacobeo Galicia - +7'25
GC
1) Capecchi - Liquigas - 10h31'11
2) Sagan - Liquigas - +1'39
3) Hivert - Saur-Sojasun - +1'47
4) Antomarchi - TT1 - +1'49
5) Zubeldia - Radioshack - +1'51
57) Ion Izagirre - Xacobeo Galicia - +7'45
Tomorrow's last stage is another hilly one, we are going to try again for the break, and try to defend Ion Izagirre's mountain jersey, he currently has a 10 point gap over Chalapud! |

Stage 4 is another hilly affair, and as stated at the end of stage 3 we would try for the break again and try consolidate Ion Izagirre's KoM jersey
Just like yesterday there were a lot of attacks at the beginning, our very own Gaizka GerrkoechevarrÃa (don't ask me how you pronounce it ) put in a dig, and found himself in the break of the day!
Joining him in the break were Van Leijen (Lotto) Belda (Burgos) Van Avermaet (BMC) Tiralongo (Astana) and Pichot (Europcar)
Over the last categorizied climb of the day and no-one in the breakaway was any danger to Izagirre's lead in the KoM competition so he is the winner of the jersey and a nice little bonus for the team!
With no attacks on the last ascent Liquigas were able to bring back the breakaway at the top before the descent down into the finish town, Gaizka sees it as his last chance to try for the stage so attacks! He's strong on the downhill so he knows he'll be hard to bring back if he gets the gap.
His attack was neutralized and he found himself at the front of the large group of leaders with 3km's to go, he knows he has nothing to lose so sprints as hard as he can!
No surprises as he's caught and passed pretty easily and comes in 35th at the same time as the days winner Joaquim Rodriguez, still a great ride from the youngster!
Final Podiums
Our best overall finisher was GerekoechevarrÃa finishing 47th on GC, we would be disappointed but we can't complain as we come away with the KoM jersey. Not a bad start for the team! |
