Has there ever been a cyclist bust?

In other words, what are examples of cyclists signing large contracts and not living up to them, or of young, heralded riders who were actually quite lackluster?
Or is cycling structured in a way that creates a near-perfect market--where it is quite easy to determine the skill of a rider relative to all the others?
P.S. I ask this because I bought PCM solely because of the Steam sale, and I liked it enough that I want to learn more about it. |

Rasmus Guldhammer is the first name that springs to my mind. One of the best in the U23 races, but never managed to develop into a top pro rider.
There are plenty of others as well. Just take a look at all the promising youngsters Rabobank produce that never reach top level. Vermeltfoort is probably the latest example.

There are alot of riders and I remember Sicard. He was a very talented french GT rider that didn't come to what we expected from him. He got a lot of injuries and literally didn't get any good result in this season and the last.
Pliuschin is another example. He was considered to become a very good cobble-especialist and he didn't got even close of a good result their. Currently he is more of a GC racer but without any good particular results.
And there are a lot more. |

Cycling, and athletics sports in general, are hard to predict.
Some people reach their peak at 22, others at 33, and of course some reach their best at any age between those.
Of course most reach their full potential at around 30 or 32 years old, which is why some promising young riders are sometimes offered huge contracts and never live up to expectations. In fact they have just had their absolute peak at a young age.
It's impossible to tell, all managers or fans or journalists can do is guessing. |

Gerald Ciolek. He's a good cyclist right now but he was one of the biggest talent I've ever seen.

He was probably considered better/more talented than Cav back in 07.
Man, how I wish that would have turned out the other way round.
He's not that bad though, he would have won more races recently if he switched his head on when it comes to sprint timing.

Damiano Cunego, Jan Ullrich. Huge results until they were 23 or something, never achieved much more past that age (but still performed very decently). |

Coming to busts I just read an article about Mathias Belka. He was the only German next to Ullrich to get a top10 in the Baby Giro with his 6th in 2006 and also had quite a few other good results.
But he never made the jump from U23 to elite and now he retired this month as it will become even harder now with 26 years. |

Cunego's last top class season was four years ago. He was crap in 2010, and no more than decent in 2009, 2011 and this year.
And compared to 2004, every season since has been disappointing. I know that he was overperforming a lot back then, but just to compare.

Paying someone for his potential rather than his current hability is common in pretty much every sport.
