Tour de l'Avenir 2012 - Stage 6
SportingNonsense
Back to the hills. Will i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Scarponi look to make it 5 wins out of 6 for Wiggle? Can i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Betancourt make the most of having the best hill stat? Will i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Sagan win another hills stage? Can anyone gain any decisive gaps, or will it be a group sprint again? What about the breakaway?

It's a tough course today, and all questions will be answered out on the road.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-1_zps80a6e99d.jpg

Out early and KoM jersey hunting is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Durbridge, winning the 1st climb.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-2_zpsd04d42f8.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Stallaert takes 2nd, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/eb.png Albourdainy 3rd.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Scodeller wins the intermediate sprint from i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Antunes and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Santoro. (It wasnt contested)

And these 6, along with 6 others, form the day's break: i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Kuphaldt, Schwarmes, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/GER.png Roth, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/GB.png Gee, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Galiev and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.png Andersen.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-3_zpsa5bb05bd.jpg

KoM #2 goes to Albourdainy, he beats Durbridge and Stallaert to do so.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-4_zpse43e8552.jpg

Meanwhile in the peloton, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png McCarthy has crashed.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-5_zpsd2a396e8.jpg

Playing domestique for Pinot, he is still one of the best in the hills in this race and played a key role in our first hilly stage. He is hurt though, and will finish this stage dead last - a blow for Wikipedia.

Up front, Stallaert followed up victory in the 2nd sprint by taking the 3rd KoM - doing his best to defend the jersey for his team. It helps that Durbridge is further back - with Albourdainy 2nd and Roth 3rd.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-6_zpse04fd7f6.jpg

But Staellaert needs more points in the last categorised climb, and that doesnt happen. Its Roth from Kuphaldt and Durbridge - with the Aussie taking the lead in the KoM competition.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-7_zps2bb96e23.jpg

32km to go, the break lead by 2'50. But that is just under 2 minutes 10km later, and the attacks are beginning.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/hollister.png Betancourt ...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-8_zps8723705a.jpg

... then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Scarponi and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Lavery...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-9_zps9dac5644.jpg

.. but it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Shikai, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Grmay and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Eastman who are the first to cross over to the breakaway!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-10_zpsb371f08d.jpg

TV cameras suddenly spot i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Sagan off the back of the peloton. What is he doing there? He has neither crashed nor punctured - 4th in GC and stage favourite, not in a good position at all at 13km to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-11_zps10f6941b.jpg

Everything has come together up front, only for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Pinot to launch a new move. Eastman is following again - Shikai and Betancourt trying to get across.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-12_zps3fd91852.jpg

Scarponi makes it across to Eastman's wheel and as the pace lulls, Betancourt strikes hard.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-13_zps6d594d96.jpg

But it is shortlived. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/milka.png Delaplace, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Kennaugh and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.png Quintana make their way up to him and we are back to a peloton again.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-14_zps6f94bf93.jpg

5km to go then, and we are on a downhill run to the finish. Peloton has 41 riders, and is led by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Weiss.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-15_zpseed0f556.jpg

And it's still downhill when Weiss launches the sprint, amid a challenge from i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Cerne.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-16_zps38dc174b.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Festina are eager for a stage win and make Landa and Kennaugh are immediately up here.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-17_zps6a3e915f.jpg

But they may have gone too soon once again, as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Bennett now takes the lead into the final kilometre. Still downhill.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-18_zps66daedef.jpg

Round the final bend, and suddenly the road is going upwards again. Bennett has a good lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-19_zps41fd4018.jpg

But here comes i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Kirsch!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-20_zps2dc6e107.jpg

The Luxembourger is flying, and closing the gap quickly.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-21_zps088867d3.jpg

Starting to move alongside...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-22_zps07d7f5ed.jpg

... as they lunge for the line.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-23_zps4d0bf9fe.jpg

And it's Bennett!!!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-24_zps909ce64b.jpg

Stage win for the Kiwi on the Aussie team as Kirsch just misses out - a second second place on a hilly stage for Focused. The previous 2nd came from Skujins, who was 4th today - while Leigh Howard finished strongly for 3rd.

But what about Sagan? It turns out he got dropped going back to the team car for water, and he is forced to sprint all the way to finish line to regain contact with the group.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/avenir6-25_zps2af9b0a6.jpg

But this isnt the peloton, and he has lost 1'36 - slipping down to 16th overall.
