Importance of nationality in road race coverage?

I've often wondered why, when watching road races, both the announcers and those that produce the in-race graphics almost always mention the rider's name and his nationality, e.g. "the Australian Cadel Evans" or "the American Tejay Van Garderen" or "there are 8 Spanish riders in the breakaway". Sometimes, but nowhere near as often, the announcers will mention and the graphics will instead show the rider's name and team affiliation.
Does anyone know why there seems to be such importance on a rider's nationality and not his team? From my perspective, I'd rather know how many (example) Movistar or Rabobank riders are in the break as opposed to how many Spaniards. |

This. Also in my experience they mention both country and team.
How hard can it be?

I think that would be because it's fairly easy to see what team a rider is riding for, but you can't visually distinguish their nationality from your TV set.
In a football match the commentators won't constantly refer to Torres as "the Chelsea striker" but instead usually as "the Spanish striker".
The number of teams participating in a cycling makes things not quite so obvious as that example, but I think a good commentator would typically clear up any notable team presences within a large group. |

Assuming the rider(s) are being shown on the screen at the same time the commentator is talking or the in-race graphics are displayed.

Similar issue, I guess. Why even add the adjective "Spanish"? Does it matter?

They also mention it because it may explain some riders behaviour in the race.
Some will not ride against another one from their nationality if there are riders from a second nationality in the group. Some instead will chase anyone from their nationality unless it's someone from their team (*cough* the French *cough*).
Also, it's a way to cheer up the audience, as sadly many people will rather cheer for an asshole from their nationality that they don't know than for a nice guy that they don't know either but from another nationality. |

Different ram.
Ours is more of a fighter as it's standing on its back legs.
It's the flag of Brittany's Cornwall (not to be confounded with England's Cornwalls).
