Hi,
i have a major question to the community here:
can someone user win a flat stage (one-day race or stages races) with a breakaway group? i mean attacks from first 10-20km and here with a "group of the day". not attacks 10-7km to go.
this is a important question, i cant win with a group. ever massprints. same with hilly or climb stages, the peloton make speed and "gameover". peloton closed, after attacks the favs and fights for the stagewin. |

it is possible that they make it, but it's not common. especially when the player has a rider in the break the AI will allmost allways chase. |

Well, seeing a breakaway making it home is a fairly rare occurence when i play.
One thing ive tried to do is attacking in groups of 2 or 3 riders from my own team. Make sure one of them are someone who could solo the last 20kms or so. Simply ride along until the pack decides that they cant let you win, then have your other rider(s) pull some backbreaking relay's to keep the pack at bay. Occasionally, but not often, the breakaway group will make it home with your favored finisher plus some other breakaway members, but often you must go and try to solo the remainder of the distance when the pack gets too close for comfort.

I have only done it once and it was during the Tour of California. That race tends to have a lot of Continental teams and it is early in the season when the riders are not in good form. |

i have with group no chance to win a break. every same. a few riders attacks after 10-20km. but 20-30km to go is the peloton closed. masssprint.
so unrealistic.

Ok, maybe it's a little unrealistic but I recently had a stage race where first stage, I launched one guy off the front in a breakaway with 30 km left and won the stage with 1 minute on pack. Next few stages, the breakaways would keep gaining time until I! started chasing them. Makes sense, you have yellow jersey, other teams don't want to work for you, so you gotta chase 'em down. |

I just raced the Enco Tour and i don't like to chase down breakaways and I had Cancellara in the Red Jersey so i would just send one of my riders into the breakaway. They would get a fair distance too with a big gap and then on 1 or 2 stages the peloton split with 3 teams up the front in an E2 (me being one of the teams) and than another group of the rest of the teams. The E2 teams would ride really hard and work back the breakaway and than I just attack with Cancellara with 15km to go and they had nothing left to chase him down with so he made about 1-2mins back on the peloton. |

Once I was Caisse in a small Spanish race against only SDV, Euskatel and Continental teams. I got a rider on the break then made all my other riders relay. I set the effort to 50 and the peleton slowed down. My opponents only attacked with 10km to go but by then the break had already finished and won by over 15mins. I doubt it would work against half decent teams tho. |

The pack will chase anyone who is close to the leaders in GC
Take a decent (but not your best) rider. Get into a breakaway on stage 1, get as many KoM points as possible, then the important part:
finish AT LEAST 40-50 min beihind the stage winner. For the rest of the tour they won't bother to chase you, unless there are others in the breakaway that are contenders.
I found this useful for getting KoM jersey...
You can also win a couple of stages by working very little in the break, then going solo if teh gap is stil more than 1,5 minutes per 10km to the finish. If there is 20km to go and you have a gap of 3min, you have a chance.
Good luck |

Usually I can make a break away work if its fairly large size (10 or more riders) on hilly terrain on a late day of a stage race with a rider out of overall GC. (5-10 mins). Up to this stage I've rested my rider fairly well and then try to place him in the early break. (I always look for a rider who is working for the mountain or sprint jersey and counter attack with him) That usually 'triggers' a fairly large group to attack early on. Once the break has been established I'll send my rider to the back of the pace line not taking a pull unless they start asking for help - then I'll do a pull or two and fall to the back again - you have to keep an eye out. Don't go for any points otherwise you'll pull the group apart.
Once you see the peleton pick up its pace start picking up yours in the pace line, and start doing the math. Roughly 1-1.5 min for every 10km. At this point you'll still need the stronger riders help, so don't blow them out of the water cuz you'll just burn yourself out. 20-30k out you'll need at least 3-4 min lead and then a great solo effort. Pick a place to attack and go for it.
Another trick is to move your team in the peleton during the 'chase' put them to the head of the peleton then slow it down - other teams will pick up the pace, but the overall speed if the peleton will decrease slightly over a km. I usually do this several times during the chase just to break up the pace. This may be all it takes over the final km of the race.
good luck! |
