Due to some problems with FDB Eire Tour and Deutschland Rundfahrt, also this race has been held up for a while. The situation has now started to clear up a bit however, so we travel to northern France for this sprinter's classic. Everyone without a great kick of speed will most likely find it hard to produce any noteworthy result. The finishing circuit does include a small climb, but it shouldn't be enough of a difficulty for it to be an opportunity for the puncheurs.
Tom Boonen leads the line of major sprinters in the race, looking for yet another victory. Looking at his results this season, you find it hard to believe that anyone will be able to match the Belgian. Brings with him two excellent leadout men in the shapes of Nolan Hoffman and Samuel Caldeira.
Sam Bewley hasn't quite been able to match Boonen in the sprints so far in the season, but has probably been eyeing this race for a long time, seeing it as a big opportunity to. Also has a strong leadout in Yauheni Hutarovich.
Ben Swift spearheads the strong Vesuvio team, hoping to test his speed against the other top sprinters in the PT. Helped out by a couple of really strong domestiques, the Brit is one of the big favourites for a podium, if not more.
Daniele Bennati, the CT's dominant man in the sprints this year, will probably find the opposition a bit more difficult than usual here. While he probably is the only one who can match Boonen in terms of pure speed, he still lacks a bit to reach the Belgian's level. A very strong outsider in this race.
Jurgen Roelandts has a lot of pressure on his shoulders from the team management, due to Carmeuse's position in the team rankings. The rest of the team's squad look built for forming a sprint train with strong flat riders.
Michael Van Stayen and Bacardi are probably hoping that the race will be as hard as possible, to boost their chances of success. If the little hill on the final circuit proves to be more difficult than expected, he'll be dangerous.
Matthew Goss lines up alongside strong team mates like world champion Van Garderen and Summerhill. The Australian showed for example in the Giro d'Italia that he really is a sprinter to be reckoned with. Outside shot for a podium.
Romain Vanderbiest has been doing fairly well during the season, and would probably not mind more success. Has a very good backup from riders like Franzoi, Guarnieri and Richeze, in case they'd try to set up a train.
Dan Holloway and Anthony Lavoine will try to continue the positive trend for Festina after Pozzato's victory in Tour of Northern Europe. Both of them are potential Top 5 / 10 bets, so it will be interesting to see who they go for.
Luke Rowe, the British champion, is, at least on paper, Wiggle's best chance for a top results. However, we definitely shouldn't discount Simone Ponzi from the discussion, in case the race turns out to be harder than expected.
Raúl Granjel Cabrera will try to surprise for his Sony Ericsson team. While he isn't on Boonen or Bewley's level, he still has the kick needed to catch the big guys off guard, as we saw him do several times in the Tour. Should definitely not be underestimated.
Vanoverschelde, Richeze, Ventoso, Avelino, Castañeda, Kreder, Pedersen and Bozic will all be dark horses. They'll probably be captains in their respective teams, although none of them should be able to compete for the top spot on the podium in normal conditions.

This race has been held twice and Pearl Adidas (formerly SIC Radical) won it both times (first with Ballan, then with Vanderbiest - the reigning champion).
Let's not mess with tradition here folks!

Looks a bit lumpy. I recall a decent race in this one last year with the circuits being close to selective enough for a late attacker.
Should be a big battle of the sprinters though - its a nice stacked field!

I'd like to see Boonen duke it out with Bennati and then they both lose to Castañeda. |

Alright Richeze, let's see if you can finish in the back of the top-15.

Here's the team standings then, with Liechtenstein, TONE and Fourmies included. Carmeuse and Spyker doing their best to catch Cafe de Colombia, while Festina now hold a lead in the battle for 5th

Am I right in thinking Cunego is used up? In which case things are getting a little close for CdC. 260ish and 340 points is a bit much from the three one day classics left.
Some tight battles all over the standings.
EDIT: I am aware of Wildcards taking stages in stage races but cannot recall a wild card team taking a classic - is that a first?

Good report, thanks. Shame we failed to place in the top 50....

He's finishing the season at Lombardy. Got Rogers/Abal/Ivars at Chrono des Herbiers and hopefully eight finishers at Mendrisio.
I declare CdC safe!
Spoiler I think...

So disappointing ...
Going to be close for top 10, hope Ricco gets top 5 in Mendrisio/Lombardia and i should be ok. Keizer should top 10 in Herbiers aswell.

It is a first yes, though Bennati is the best sprinter in the game, so not a huge surprise!

Another fucking awesome result. Too bad Lavoine didn't manage to hold on for another 30cm. A podium would have been his best result by a MILE. 4th and 10th here with Puma swooping shitloads of points is magnificant. Just what I need to stay in touch of that 5th place. Boonen will be difficult to keep down, so he might singlehandedly get his team a 5th place.

Considering my team actually put together a solid leadout that was a terrible move by Goss.

Looking at these standings I get depressed that Fothen crashed out of the Giro, and crashed twice in the TdF I would have been safely in 2nd position had I not gotten that amount of bad luck from both GT's. I can live with the amount of bad luck I had in other races, like when I crashed out of the California 1km from the finish line (How did that ever happen btw ) But to miss out on two of the three most important races of the entire season is unbearable. Oh well, I guess next season I will get the luck back...
5th now is pleassant looking at how the season has been looking, but is definately not mirroring the teams strength. Honestly I believe that only Vesuvio has been stronger than my team this season.
Oh, and sorry for this post, had to get it out of my system I'm really looking forward to the off season btw. Several sweet riders will be on free because of teams disbanding.

WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO

That was exactly what I was hoping for when I applied for a Wildcard, and that was the most important (inofficial) season goal for me.
It's one thing to build up a reputation in CT, but a totally different one to say hello big time in PT.
