The last stage of the Tour of Britain is a short, flat criterium in the city of London. The GC is almost decided by now, as it seems unlikely that i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Jonathan Bellis can make a top three today. Likewise, only a disaster would make i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Danilo Napolitano lose the green jersey, while the KoM is decided, the winner will be i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Olivier Le Gac.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0002.jpg

The first move is started by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Fabrice Jeandesboz, and the Frenchman is joined by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Taiji Nishitani and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Evan Oliphant. Behind them, there’s an 8 men chase group with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Gatis Smukulis, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Tom Thill, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Jonathon Thire, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Luke Durbridge, King Lok Cheung, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Marco Marcato, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Marco Corti, and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Joeri Stallaert.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0003.jpg

When both groups were about to merge, Thire falls. Bad luck for the Puma sprinter, who would be the fastest in the breakaway.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0004.jpg

Finally the chase group links up with 78km to go. We have, then, 10 men up the road, because Thire has been caught after his crash, and they have a 1’51’’ lead.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0005.jpg

And Thire is trying again! Hats off to the French sprinter, who isn’t giving up in spite of his crash.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0006.jpg

There’s a fall in the peloton now, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Junpei Murakami couldn’t stay upright, in the very same turn where Thire fell before. The rain is making this dangerous, and obviously that turn is, for some reason, specially slippery.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0007.jpg

After an impressive effort, Thire bridges the gap and joins the breakaway. Chapeau to him, really. Many would have preferred an easier ride in the peloton after a crash. The now 11 attackers have 4’06’’ with 56km to go, surely it won’t be long until the sprinters team start to work in the peloton.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0008.jpg

And there they are. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Rothaus and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Proximus Trek want one last chance for Maxime Vantomme and Mark Cavendish, so they don’t go home without any stage win. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png UniCredit is working as well, looking for a second stage win for Danilo Napolitano.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0009.jpg

With 25km to, the gap is down to 1’36’’, so it looks clear that this stage will be , just as expected, for the sprinters.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0010.jpg

18km to go and the gap goes under 1 minute. Then, Smukulis decides it’s too early to get caught, and launches a strong attack. Only Cheung responds, while Jeandesboz tries to organize the rest chase them down.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0011.jpg

However Jeandesboz fails at organizing the chase, so all but Smukulis and Cheung are caught with 15km to go. Smukulis now has 16’’ on Cheung and 1’11’’ on the peloton.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0012.jpg

10km to go for Smukulis, and his gap on Cheung hovers at 16’’, while he has just 57’’ on the peloton now.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0013.jpg

With 7km to go, Cheung gives up and is caught. Smukulis’ lead has been reduced to 24’’ and the peloton has him in sight, so the mass sprint looks a done deal now.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0014.jpg

Crash in the peloton now! i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Peter Kennaugh lost balance, and with him i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Grégory Rast, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Pieter Ghyllebert, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Tiziano Dall’Antonia, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Aleksandar Flügel, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Ahmad Haidar Anuawar, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Jéremy Roy, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Will Frischkorn, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Tony Martin and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Evan Oliphant have hit the tarmac. Looks like only Dall’Antonia will have to abandon the race.

The crash has caused a split as well, and among those affected are, besides those who fell, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Francesco Reda, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Julien Vermote, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Rory Sutherland, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Sylvain Calzati, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Ben Hermans and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Samuel Sánchez.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0015.jpg

In the front of the peloton, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png UniCredit is setting their sprint train again with

Davide Bragazzi
Boy Van Poppel
Mirko Lorenzetto
Danilo Napolitano

Following Napolitano is the race leader, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Daryl Impey, while behind the South African i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Maciej Ulanowski is trying to leave Mark Cavendish in a good position for the sprint.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0016.jpg

Smukulis is finally caught with 3500m to go. We can see Impey, Corioni, Cavendish and Mohs following UniCredit’s train, but bad positioning means the likes of Vantomme, Docker, Crocket or Vingerling have no chance today.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0017.jpg

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0018.jpg

Another crash! In the same turn that saw Thire and Murakami fall, Lorenzetto falls and takes Impey and Smukulis with him! After them, many riders can’t avoid the fall:

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Cherif Abdallah
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Lars Crocket
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png King Lok Cheung, Michael Vink
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Noam Cohen, Yannick Stoltz
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Amaël Moinard, Chris Sutton, Joseph Cooper, Matteo Priamo
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Frederik Nolf
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Jack Bauer
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Óscar Freire

All fall as well. Drama for the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Jayco - Red Bull team, that could have their race ruined in the very last kilometers of the last stage.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0019.jpg

The chaos has caused that Napolitano is alone in the front, with some seconds over Corioni, Cavendish, Mohs and a fading Van Poppel.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0020.jpg

Napolitano is the most benefitted with the crash, with 500m to go his advantage pretty much guarantees him the win.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0021.jpg

And he takes it! 2nd victory for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Napolitano in the Tour of Britain, and the Italian wins the points jersey as well.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0022.jpg

The mass crash has turned into a massacre. When the group splitted in the previous crash arrived to the infamous turn, another enormous group of riders crashed, including

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Vesely, Ariesen, Hermans, Krieger, Landa
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Dekkers, Stroetinga, Vermeltfoort, Ligthart, Veelers, Westra
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Thwaites, Opie, Holohan, Perry, Oliphant
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Larsson, Brammeier, Lavery, Persson, Gudsell
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Van Impe, Atkins, Raabe, Engoulvent
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Roulston, Anacona, Mollema, Tankink, Diniz
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png D’Amore, Sterbini, Zanotti, Longo Borghini, Pirazzi, Fonzi
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Grmay, Sulzberger, Dowsett, Appleby, Rowsell
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Haidar Anuawar, Besada
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman, Bouhanni, Egger, Martin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Zirbel, Pasamontes, Reijnen, Sánchez, Ghyllebert
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Viganò, Di Maggio, Corti, Haavardsholm
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Gaudin, Roy, Meyer, Thill, Andersen, Debusschere
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Loddo, Predatsch, Flügel, Preidler, Zabel
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Meiji.png Hayakawa, Lloyd
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Mori, Calzati
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Rast, Keisse, Saramotins
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Polanc, Van den Eynde, La Lavandier, Stenuit

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0023.jpg

Cavendish easily takes 2nd ahead of Mohs, while Corioni is 4th and Van Poppel 5th. It will be interesting to see how GC ends after today, Napolitano could very well jump to the podium, who would have thought that before the race!

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0024.jpg

The group including i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Bellis and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Ista arrives some seconds back, probably not enough to open a gap, led by Hushovd. All the crashes could put the young Brit in the GC lead.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0025.jpg

The group of Impey, Reda, Sutherland and Vermote comes in a minute behind. That ends the hopes of a GC win for the Red Bull sprinter.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0026.jpg

Because of the crash, several riders climb off their bikes, and won’t end the race. Those are

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Zanotti
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Van Impe
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman, Martin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Polanc
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Flügel

Tough luck for Martin and Flügel, not just they lose their good GC places, but they won’t even be able to finish this crash-marred stage.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%208/PCM0027.jpg

The biggest group with most of the riders from the last crash, including 10th in GC i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Pieter Ghyllebert finishes 5’ down.

So, finally, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Jonathan Bellis takes the GC for the second year in a row, although probably the way he won it isn’t the most pleasant, winning your home race is always a special moment. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Kevin Ista is second, thanks to the breakaway in the 5th stage, undoubtedly a great result from the Belgian, as probably his team didn’t expect to get that much from this race. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Danilo Napolitano completes the podium. Surprising to see a pure sprinter in the podium probably, but several race circumstances played in his favour.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png UniCredit is possibly the big winner of the race. Two stage wins with Napolitano, plus 3rd, 6th, 7th and 9th in GC thanks to the crashes in the last stage. As for the secondary classifications, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Olivier Le Gac wins the KoM, Napolitano the points jersey, and Bellis, obviously, the young riders classification, while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Team WWE is the best team, after taking the lead from Jayco – Red Bull in the 5th stage. Congratulations to all of them!
