I have played about 50 stages now- two careers with lesser teams up to Paris-Nice and as yet no break away has won. (I have been in nearly them all)
Is this normal?>
To be fair, there has always been a reason to chase it down but still to have none stay away is a bit worrying...

How often do breakaways win in real life on the early season flatter stages? And yes the breakaways do sometimes win and this mainly happens on mountainous stages |

If you play on easy mode and attack every stage, you will win almost 25% of them in a breakaway.

Just came second in a six men breakaway in the penultimate stage of the Tirreno.
It's all a matter of tactics, not just your tactics, but taking standings, fatigue, leading team, etc, all into account. Also, later in stage races break stand a better chance.
Early on, several break did not make it, were chased down hard when containing too many riders, riders of too high quality, or riders too close to the leader.
The six men break that made it contained no riders closer than 15' from the leader, several strong teams were involved. The pack was initially uninterested and later on unable to catch up.
Quite like real life, huh? |

Had a few, a couple on Tour of Malaysia after the big mountain stage where riders way down on GC got away and were let to fight out the stage.
Also once on a mountain stage I've been successful, there have been a few when I've done a quick sim, but other than that little luck. |

If I'm not mistaken having a rider or riders with a higher fighting spirit stat/s also increases the chance that th break could stay. Correct me if I'm wrong. |

You are wrong. The fighter stat raises the chances of a rider going into the break. |

In the GT's there are always two, three stages for the breakaways. With the lack of sprinters and no team who wants to chase, there are more breakaway stages.
