Team Roster:
Robert Gesink
Robert is arguably the teams best and most prominent rider as he headlines a strong squad of Dutch based riders complemented with a smattering of foreign talent. As the face of the team, its essential that he gets some solid results in 2012 to enhance his reputation and also to keep head sponsor Rabobank happy.
The obvious target for Robert is to contend in the Tour de France, however he will be seen as an outside shot this year given the talent at the disposal of some of the other UCI World Tour teams. Lastly one concern for the incoming General Manager Albers Pansen is that Gesink's contract expires at the end of this years racing, an issue that could do with resolving sooner rather than later.
Bauke Mollena
Young Mollema is an up and coming Dutch talent that the Rabobank team will do well to protect in order to aid his development. Mollema who is entering his 5th year as a pro has recovered well from an illness setback in 2009 to force his way to prominence in 2011 by collecting the Vuelta a EspaƱa Points Classification honour.
Rabobank will look at Mollema to continue to progress alongside Gesink and play a key role in the Grand Tours.
Lars Boom
Another up and coming Dutch protege as Lars Boom is a product of the Rabobank team coming through the Junior and then CT ranks to eventually lineup for the pro team in the UCI World Tour.
Boom has shown his taste for success by becoming the Dutch National Cyclo-Cross Champion 6 years on the spin, as well as collecting overall 1st places in the Tour of Belguim (2009) and Tour of Britain (2011). The team will hope he can now reproduce this success in the Grand Tours and Monuments.
Steven Kruijswijk
Kruijswijk may still have alot to learn and prove to earn kudos in the cycling world, however his recent performance in the 2011 Giro' coming in 8th overall certainly made people take notice of yet another Dutchman amongst the Rabobank ranks.
Again his talent in stage races could be called upon to help the team assist Gesink especially in the Tour de France, however look for some notable individual success from this abrasive rider.
Luis Leon Sanchez
A recent addition to the Rabobank roster, this Spainard has a solid pedigree that includes a pair of top 10 finishes in Grand Tour events. 2011 was Sanchez's first season with the team and he collected his 3rd stage win in the Tour de France.
Arguably at his peak of his career he will be hoping that the team can help him collect more victories, especially on home soil in the Vuelta.

'Bank Manager
Dutch team Rabobank make move to fulfil potential
by: Barry Ryan
With another year of exciting cycling upon us teams are gearing up for the campaign in their own way. In the Netherlands, Rabobank have taken their preparation in a new direction by replacing former Team Manager Erik Breukink after 7 years at the helm, with another Dutchman Albers Pansen.
Now you may ask who is Pansen, well this little known native made his name in junior coaching and impressed the Rabobank hierachy with his knowledge and fresh ideas to bring into the Pro circuit. Pansen said "I couldnt believe it when they said they wanted to interview me, it all happened so quick from there on in. There were rumours that Erik had left his role, but even then I never expected that call"
Pansen inherits a cycling roster full of talent but lacking the coherent success that should befall them. Names such as Gesink, Boom and Spaniard Luis Leon Sanchez stand out from the list, but there is alot of potential there for this team to become a consistent competitive performer across the season.
"I have alot to assess, we are short of time and getting the riders sorted into training camps is our first priority. However I will be talking to each of them individually to see what they expect from me and the team in the coming months. Nothing is achieved overnight, but with a bit of graft and some fresh ideas we would hope that we can be productive"
Other than playing catchup, Rabobank find themselves playing catchup with teams such as Sky Procycling, Lotto and BCM looking like the main players in 2012. But with so much at stake this could be the year that Rabobank finally get themselves back on top of the cycling world.

Feeling Camp
All smiles as Rabobank return from LA in good shape
by: Barry Ryan
It was the first 'test' of the new regime at Rabobank and everything appears to be positive after they decided to take their whole roster out to Santa Barbara for a 5 day pre-season conditioning camp.
Initially people questioned the move given the expense to the team, however the riders came back looking good and feeling good too, as stated by Robert Gesink "We enjoyed our time together on the road and off it" he continued "We were able to bond and develop some solid regimes and improve our fitness in a superb environment".
Spaniard Luis Leon Sanchez also spoke of how impressed he was with the commitment shown to ensure this team has the best of everything in their preparation "Well they certainly didnt spare any expense, we all felt good everyday, our recovery times improved and I think that is important"
Albers Pansen only spoke of the upcoming Australian events that will see Matthews, Brown and Renshaw all take part in their National Championships before the first UWT event with the Tour Down Under, "We have 3 strong guys out there ready for their national events, we hope to support them fully and then to put out a strong squad for the Tour Down Under and get this season going off on a positive footing"
The positive start for Pansen and Rabobank bodes well for the Dutch cycling team, if they can get some solid rankings in the upcoming Australian events then who knows where this season will take the 'Oranje' team.

Great Gerrans
Orica rider squeezes out Cadel Evans in close finish
by: Barry Ryan
Blistering heat, a healthy crowd and a 38 strong field took centre stage in the cycling world as the season opened up with the Australian National Championship on the roads of Buninyong.
Tour de France 2011 winner and BMC rider Cadel Evans was picked out as the early favourite to take the race honours but a close race in which no one broke from the peloton until the final 20kms saw Evans get picked off as the Orica GreenEdge team could celebrate on home soil as Simon Gerrans went 2 places better than he did in 2011 to claim the Australian National crown.
Gerrans did attempt to kick clear earlier in the race as he and Sky rider Richie Porte etched out a slender 20 second advantage, however the peloton often led by the Rabobank team clawed back that advantage to ensure a tight finish.
Above: Gerrans and Porte edge ahead but the peloton was never far behind
Gerrans said "I knew Cadel (Evans) was on me and also Richie (Porte) who worked hard with me all race to get some sort of gap early, so it came down to just upping the workrate to ensure I had that gap at the line. Of course im proud, we are as a team, we came here at our home race essentially and wanted to prove we are the best place for Australian riders to come, so yes today we achieved what we set out for"
As for Rabobank, they looked the strongest of the teams throughout most of the race, but only Michael Matthews could hold his own in the sprint coming in a respectable 6th place as both Renshaw and Brown got caught up in treacle to roll home at the back of the peloton in the late 30s.
Above: Rabobank's 3 Australians did alot of the work to ensure todays peloton stayed competitive
Albers Pansen looked comfortable post race, saying "Well we got caught up a bit during the sprint and obviously to see both Brown and Renshaw fall away like that didnt look to good. However Michael (Matthews) showed us why we have him in the pro team as he has great potential as a sprinter"
In the end though its Orica GreenEdge who can take all the plaudits with both the individual and team wins. There is a days rest now for the riders before the Individual Time Trial event that gives these riders another chance to impress.

Skys The Limit
Porte snags win from Meyer in close finish
by: Barry Ryan
Sky's Richie Porte capped off a couple of fantastic days for him and the UK based team as he outgunned favourite Cameron Meyer (Orica) to collect the Australian ITT Championship by 4", as the top 4 all finished within 10 seconds of each other.
Porte was seen as one of the contenders for the crown, but with a field containing Meyer and his Orica compatriots Bobridge and Durbridge as well as Cadel Evans, a victory would have been seen as a coup for the Sky rider. However after the Orica 'guns' posted their times earlier, Porte came flying into the final straight with a chink of light to post a winning time of 1h16'30".
BMC's Evans would roll home in 5th, whilst Rogers of Sky came 6th as the rest of the field failed to make any dent in the time put down by Porte. Porte said "To come so close to the National Championship on the road hurt, although 2nd was probably more than we had accounted for. So today I knew if I gave it a push then there could be a chance to sneak in another good placing, which now as we know cant be any better"
Outside of the lead riders one of the biggest disappointments in the field would be the performance of the Rabobank team, especially Michael Matthews who had a 35" advantage after the 3rd sprint, yet faltered badly in the final kilometers to wind up in 21st place, nearly 3' off the pace. Whilst Renshaw and Brown again wound up at the back end of the field after very disappointing showings.
Above: Matthews looked good and ahead of the pace through 3 sprints, only to falter badly when it counted
When questioned Rabobank's new Manager said "Not good enough, no where near the standard we expect. I think we got complacent, maybe tactically things slipped away from us, but all in, these 3 riders should not be sitting that far back in the rankings. The Tour becomes key for us to try and gain that respect back into the team"

Cantwell Bags Sprint Finish
Aussie collects win in tough opening stage
by: Barry Ryan
The first UCI World Tour event saw a spectacular finish as the heat ensured the riders stayed together in order to work through the tough conditions and stay in contention for the opening tour of the season.
A close sprint saw Australian rider Jonathan Cantwell claim the opening stage for Team Saxo Bank - Tinkoff Bank with Ciolek of Omega Pharma coming in 2nd.
Above: Cantwell celebrates as he crosses the line first
Outside of the main classification, Marcus Burghardt of BMC collected 16pts to lead take the Mountain Jersey, whilst Norwegian Kristoff (Katusha Team) came home to the reward of the Young Riders Jersey, albeit ahead of a clutch of riders. Whilst French team FDJ - Bigmat sit atop the team standings at this premature stage.
"Delighted" exclaimed Cantwell "Its a great start to my home tour, I didnt really know if I could do it coming into that sprint... but things played out well for me, a couple of the faster guys got caught up behind me and we are pleased to start well for our sponsors Saxo Bank - Tinkoff Bank"
As for Dutch team Rabobank, they faired a bit better than they did in the recent time trial farce. Tom Leezer came through in 13th, Jos Van Emden finished 20th, whilst Australian Michael Matthews makes up for his late time trial collapse to finish up 33rd.

Spanish riders dominate but its Lastras who has the legs
by: Barry Ryan
A gruelling stage in temperatures hitting 100 saw both minor breakaways but also large dropoffs as the pace of the peloton put paid to a few riders aspirations in this tour.
Out front early on Raynes of Lotto, Zargari of AG2R and Garmins 'Rathe made the early running as they were part of a 5 man group that gobbled up the points through the sprints and mountain stage, yet with the heat on and the peloton determined to be in the shakeup at the end of the race, they were clawed back into a sprint finish through the winding roads.
Above: Rabobank put together a strong ride at the head of the peloton in order to keep Sanchez in position for the final sprint
As we entered the final kilometers, the Movistar team got their man Lastras into position, whilst FDJ rider Geslin ensured he was on the wheel of the Spaniard to push him all the way to the line. Unfortunately for Rabobank, Sanchez fell away in the sprint as he got locked up on the inside to roll in 6th, as another Spanish rider Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel - Euskadi) finished off the Top 3.
