Does Steam automatically install patches, or do I need to manually install these?

Steam updates automatically. No chance to do it manually I think.
Negative is that Steam is not installing beta patches.

Just checking you can still modify the game with pcm daily patches etc... if you get the steam version?

Yes. Pretty sure. You just need to install it in the Steam/PCM folder or so.
