What triggers crashes in PCM? Is it random?

It is actually based on collisions like in real life.. thats why riders never crash on TT's and TTT's in PCM
only problem is that mass crashes never really occur on the flat stages like we saw today. Why?
because players gets frustrated if their leader crashes and looses time. That might result in consumers getting angry at the game and Cyanide don't want that for natural reasons.
it's a tradeoff: less realism but in general more happy consumers.

But I thought PCM-fans wanted a realistic games...
Anyways it's a part of the sport so it's too bad it aint more of them. Especially in the big races..

well my leaders do crach from time to time (on flat stages to...)
but how does the game 'calculate' when some riders collide with eachother? |

Just because 10.000 PCMDaily members want total realism doesn't mean that the 200k of casual consumers buying the game every year wants it. I know many people who just watches TDF and wants to dig it out in a 3D race afterwards in PCM.
they have no idea how to do a career in the game and woud never understand that the random chance of a masscrash is part of the sport. For them it would ruin the entertainment that PCM provides
PCM appeals to the broad audience not the hardcore cycling fan who wants everything to be as realistic as possible

Yeah I guess you're right. What they should do is having a 'hardcore-mode' with more crashes and other factors!

sure my do to from time to time when playing PCM. But where you would see 10 mass crashes in real life in TDF you will only see 1 or 2 if your lucky in PCM.
this "reduced chance" is to avoid angry consumers. 7 years ago you would often see a HUGE crash in Paris Roubaix in Arenberg that made people angry so Cyanide removed it (even though people like me enjoyed it)
it's the same old story, DB-makers want total freedom in the DB to manipulate the game but a few n00bs fucks up and releases a DB that makes the game crash so other gamers blame Cyanide.
Solution? a total hardcoded game withgout any options to change the game in the community. Thats why cyanide has moved towards less and less DB tables and options in recent years.

When the road narrows or the riders has to make a turn the AI sometimes runs out of space when placing the riders resulting in a crash
