Not the most conventional of stage profiles, but after what happened on Alpe d'Huez, this has got breakaway screaming all over it. So many of the sprinters have been eliminated, and the peloton in general, is knackered - and wary of tomorrow's time trial.
So no real favourites to mention - it could be anyone!
And particularly evil is to have a steep drag so close to the start, as the early breakaway move discovers - bad memories of Alpe d'Huez for some!
S. Chavanel J. Maillet S. Duret A. Moinard T. Pinot
A French five it is then, while also - just - clear of the peloton are 4 more.
R. Kreuziger C. Riblon B. Khalilikhosroshani A. Kunshin
Sebastien Duret is in the move - he has really become a French hero over this race. He may not climb mountains well, but every opportunity on the 'flatter' stages he has been there. Today he can secure the jersey in style.
1 S. Duret 2 J. Maillet 3 A. Moinard
And as the road flattens, these five start to build a lead, in excess of 3 minutes.
Having initially been caught on their first move: Kunshin, Khalilikhosroshani and Kreuziger have gone again. Quite some work to do to catch the French though.
Duret takes the 2nd KoM. And pats on the back to him from his fellow countrymen. The only climb left in the race is on the final stage - and it won't give anything near enough for anybody to topple him
1 S. Duret 2 A. Moinard 3 S. Chavanel
Needless to say, the peloton don't care - and today will be a stage victory for France - the 2nd of the race after Vanderbiest's sprint win. But which Frenchman?
Wikipedia, represented by Pinot, are the only team here to have won a stage. The rest have all come close - none more so than Duret on the opening stage!
But the race has been long and hard, Duret doesnt have the endurance he had that day. He is dropped by his companions - but he has got what he came for!
And here goes Chavanel. Launching his move with 32km to go.
We saw a monumental effort from Chavanel on Stage 18 - working hard on the peloton when no other team cared. It may well have saved Ardila's Top 10 spot, time will tell, but today is clearly his reward. He doesn't look back, and he doesnt need to.
Up to the finish he comes. Jack Wolfskin have their desired stage win at last, and who better than Chavanel to deliver it!
His margin of victory was greater than 6 minutes, as Moinard outkicked Pinot to secure another 2nd place for Jayco - Red Bull.
Maillet secures 4th.
And its a 5th for Duret.
The chasers never came close to linking up, and over them, only Kunshin remained clear of the peloton, for 6th. This means a gain of a couple of minutes for Wiggle to extend their teams classification lead.
Unsurprisingly, no organisation in the peloton. Bibby decides to start the sprint with 1km to go.
He takes 7th.
Phinney edges Trofimov and Cunego for 8th.
And now cya-logic struck. 17 riders had been dropped by the peloton - and finishing just 2 minutes after the peloton were the entire Festina team remaining. Holloway was dropped, Fothen and Morabito dropped back to keep him company.
Others dropped were scattered further behind - but the game decided all 17 were outside the time limit. Clearly, this is ridiculous - 2 minutes slower than the peloton is not outside the time limit. A few may have legitimitely been outside of the peloton, but I have no data on who - so all 17 are to be reinstated, given the same time as the peloton.
