V & A Waterfront, Cape Town
On behalf of both MTN and SuperSport I would like to announce the formation of what will become South Africa's premier professional cycling team. The Team will be called MTN-SuperSport.
MTN is a cell service provider throughout Africa and will be our title sponsor along with SuperSport and this team will work in conjunction with the MTN-Qhubekha team.
SuperSport are Africa's leading sports broadcasters covering not only the major cycling events but also rugby, soccer, cricket, golf, tennis and many more. They have recently started broadcasting more cycling and have seen it fit to start there own team.
Volkswagen South Africa will be providing our team cars and trucks etc. They are based in Port Elizabeth but are hoping to spread their influence into the rest of Southern Africa through this innovative marketing plan.
CycleLab are South Africa's leading bike store and run South Africa's biggest amateur cycling club. They are already business partners of SuperSport so it is a logical step for them to follow SuperSport into sponsoring this team.
Last but not least are Merida who will be providing our bikes. They are a German company but they have strong ties to CycleLab and it is through them that this deal came about. |

Robbie Hunter (right) and John-Lee Augustyn (left) are MTN-SuperSport's 6th and 7th riders respectively. They are also the first Africans to sign for the South African registered team. Robbie will most likely take on the role of lead sprinter in the team as we believe he is slightly stronger than Tomas in that regard. While John-Lee will serve as our second mountain leader alongside Alex.
Tomas Vaitkus is the First Sprinter to sign for MTN-SuperSport
Spoiler
Number 5 signing for the brand new MTN-SuperSport is Tomas Vaitkus who is both a solid sprinter and good cobble support for Sylvain.
Alex Cano Ardila is MTN-SuperSport's mountain leader
Spoiler
Alex Cano is a promising Colombian climber (what other Colombians are there). He will lead us over the mountains while aiming for GT stage wins.
Ian Stannard is MTN-SuperSport's 4th signing
Spoiler
Ian Stannard becomes MTN-SuperSport's latest (4th) signing by putting pen to paper today he also becomes the first British rider to join the team leading to questions as to whether MTN-SuperSport will have the same British connection that Barloworld had.
Ben Hermans Joins MTN-SuperSport
Spoiler
MTN-SuperSport has signed the Belgian Puncheur Ben Hermans. Read SuperSports leading cycling pundit's'(Arnold Geerts) interview with the latest addition to South Africa's attempt at the World Tour below;
AG; Ben first of all congrats on signing with MTN-SuperSport, how does it feel to now know that you will be at the forefront of developing cycling in Southern Africa.
BH; Well firstly thank you the congratulations I feel very happy to be here and be a part of the team's development plan.
AG; What will your role be within the team?
BH; I have spoken to the manager and DS and I think I will ride for myself on a few smaller hilly classics but I will also support Sylvain Chavanel in some smaller tours. Also at the moment it looks like we will be co-leaders for the Ardennes.
AG; Thank you for your time and I wish you all the best for the upcoming season.
BH; Thank you Arnold it has been a pleasure.
Sep Vanmarcke is the second signing for the new South Africans
Spoiler
Sep will be Sylvains main cobbles support as well as providing a fellow French speaker. We will be hoping to see him develop into a cobblestone beast.
Sylvain Cavanel is the first MTN-SuperSport rider in history
Spoiler
Sylvain Chavanel is the first rider to sign for MTN-SuperSport. By signing Sylvain the team management are saying that we will be a classics orientated team at least for the next three years as this is how long his contract is reported to last.

Team So Far
Sylvain Chavanel was the first rider to ever sign for MTN-SuperSport and he will be our almost supreme leader. That is thanks to his world-class cobble skills to go with a reasonable skill set for when the road turns up. His climbing skills coupled with a solid TT makes him a true threat for week long tours with TTs.
Sep Vanmarcke was our second signing and his job in the team will be as cobbles support for Sylvain yet he will be a free element for some smaller races.
Ben Hermans was our third signing and he will perform the role of co-leader with Sylvain in hilly classics but his lack of TT skills puts him out of contention for tours that include time trials.
Ian Stannard is the 4th rider to join our team and he will probably serve a similar role to Sep.
Alex Cano Ardila is our 5th signing and he is a promising Colombian rider who had a strong season last year. He will go for stage wins in Le Tour.
Our 6th signing is Tomas Vaitkus. As it stands he will be the teams sprinter as he is the only MTN-SuperSport rider with a sprint stat above 70. He will also serve to improve the legion of cobbles support that we have built up for Sylvain. Also Tomas is quite a strongman type sprinter so he should be able to hang in there to get good results in some hard, reduced peleton sprints.
Robbie Hunter is the epitome of South African cycling in the modern age. So we are very proud to have him sign for us. He will be our main sprinter.
Then we managed to get Africa's premier climber to sign, John-Lee Augustyn. He will serve as our Mountains co-leader.
John-Lee will share the role of mountains co-leader not only with Alex Cano but also Juan Mauricio Soler. Juan is an accomplished climber having previously won the KOM at le Tour with another South African team (Barloworld).
With three mountains co-laeders we needed a mountains domestique and we got just that with Rob Ruijgh.
The next rider to sign on the dotted line was our third South African rider Darren Lill. He is a good all-rounder who will be there to support our leaders on all terrain.
Our first non-South African, African rider is Rafaa Chtioui and he will perform the same roles as Darren.
Then we got our first real African young talent in the form of Daniel Teklahaimanot. He wil serve as a domestique this year but will hopefully grow into a dominant team leader.
So there is MTN-SuperSport so far. We have started to specify our team as an African team with a total of 5 African riders now on our roster. We hope to increase that number in the next few rounds of the draft. Otherwise I am happy with our squad as it is well-rounded yet has a distinct classics flavour to it.

Well today is a momentous occasion for MTN-SuperSport because we hav signed our first African riders. We managed to snag not only John-Lee Augustyn (Africa's best climber at the moment) but also the first ever South African to win a Tour de France stage ... Robbie Hunter and although he isn't at his peak he still has a strong burst of speed so I can sleep easy now knowing that no more African stars can be poached.

MTN-SuperSport reacts to Daryl Impey signing for Grolsch
The team has released a statement saying that they have accepted Daryl's decision and will try sign him next year. However, we have gotten hold of a recording from a source that was colse to team DS Patricmy when he heard the news "What the f*** is wrong with him, this is bulls***, we are the only South African team and he signs with a Dutch team!!!!!!! That B*****d". So all may not be as it seems at MTN-SuperSport. |

I have been very busy lately but I am proud to say that our team is starting to take shape and I like the shape it is taking. We signed Juan Mauricio Soler for a few reasons, first we needed some more climbers, second he has a successful past with South African teams (KOM at le Tour with Barloworld) and also Alex needed a room mate. Then we persuaded Rob Ruijgh to join and he will be mountain support for Alex, JM and John-Lee. After signing those two we went to town and signed 3 African riders; all rounders Darren Lill and Rafaa Chtioui as well as young talent Daniel Teklahaimanot. So all in all it has been a good few days.
