Ras de Cymru Stage 1
mb2612
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru052.jpg
Stage 1 and it's a short prologue. Ignatiev, Reus and Schadlich are favourites. The wind is howling out there, 47km/h, so a minor swing could give a surprise winner.

Sestili lays down the first marker: 12'47"
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru001.jpg

Van Goolen is trying to challenge him, the closing km is at 6%, not one for the power men today. Van Goolen falls 6 seconds short
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru002.jpg

Stannard has decided to go out early, and he beats Sestili by 3 seconds. i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru003.jpg
That doesn't feel quick enough to win

Now Schadlich powers home to the same time as Stannard.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru004.jpg
Stannard keeps the lead though.

Laidler goes 4th, +8"
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru005.jpg

Ovechkin now comes through with the wind pumping at 60km/h He can only manage 18th at +25". Maybe Stannard's move will pay off
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru006.jpg

Morziot is now 20th at +31". Conditions are tough out the right now.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru007.jpg

Now Froome hits the course, he gets the same time as Morizot, the hill helps neutralise his losses, but should the wind drop for the leaders he will find himself with far to much to do.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru008.jpg

Kiryenka had a stormer in the Isle of Mann, but the wind is even stronger now, at 64km/h, and he can only come in 19th, at +26"
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru009.jpg

Bodnar now also comes in at +26". Currently in 6th is the rider who was third off Martin Wolf. What a surprise that would be if he could stay there.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru010.jpg

Flugel now hits the course. I'm not sure whether the plan is for him to help Reus, or go it alone, but at +47", the decsion may have been made for him.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru011.jpg

Di Maggio now gets the leaders started, but he is riding into the teeth of the now 71km/h wind. Di Maggio doesn't even make the top 60.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru013.jpg

The Brazilian champ, Nicacio, comes in 46th place. +40".
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru014.jpg

Roy can also only manage +40". The early starters may have pulled off a master stroke here.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru015.jpg

Elijzen manages +38", but that is only good enough for 38th place.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru016.jpg

Tennant is also at +38". But the Rapha strategy of putting Stannard and Froome off early looks to have paid dividends.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru017.jpg

Konovalovas joins the bunch at +38", imagine how exciting it would have been if the wind had dropped and those three were fighting for the lead.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru018.jpg

They wouldn't have won though, because Koren has just come through in +28" meaning he takes 3 seconds off Froome, although as he is 11 stats better, it's not what he would have hoped for.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru019.jpg

Boom also beats Froome, but only by one second, as he comes in at +30"
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru020.jpg

Reus joins Boom at +30". This race has really gone wrong for the specialists.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru021.jpg

Ignatiev has had a dissapointing season, and one would probably argue that +22" on an eight km prolouge is an embarrasment, however as the last rider to get a better time than him was Laidler, one feels that maybe this was quite an impressive time. Pity it still probably means that he won't win the race.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/cym/cymru022.jpg

So Rapha take yellow, white and green, and put Froome in a very strong position compared to where he could have been, Oz have to be happy with 4th and 6th and the lead in the team competition, while Tinkoff's 4 in the top 20 bodes ominously for the TTT. On the other end of the scale Di Maggio is in 95th, +1'00" down and needs some magic to get back in this.
