Tour de Picardie - Stage 1
mb2612
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard28.jpg
The Tour of Picardie, and we hit stage 1, where Gaywood, Pacheco and Szczawinski are favourites, although the hills near the end could make this impossible for the 5 man teams to control.

It's a lovely day as the riders get underway.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picar1.jpg

The early climb provides a launchpad for attacks, which Smelcerovic, Valinin and Kirk take advantage of.

4 riders join them: Burlutsky, Gee, Mikuzis and Fernandez.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard01.jpg

Then 9 more, no DS wants to be caught out by a break away today.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard02.jpg

Amazingly, 7 more riders attack, although they are just dragging the peloton back.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard03.jpg

Bad news for SaMol though, as Thorsen punctures, two riders are back with him. They will be hoping the pace settles down soon.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard04.jpg

Zambrano leads Smelcerovic and Thomel over in a new group of 14, which has been allowed a 2 minute gap.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard05.jpg

The peloton seems to have backed off, so Thorsen is allowed back.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard06.jpg

3 more riders have jumped across the gap, but the peloton is now trying to shut this back down again

The peloton make the catch, although up front, Valinin and Machac have managed to leave their companions behind.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard07.jpg

Just when it looks like they will be allowed to go, Zambrano and then Kananen attack.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard08.jpg

Machac wins the climb, but as they go over the top Zambrano joins the front two, Kananen is a minute back.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard09.jpg

Now Burlutsky attacks the bunch
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard10.jpg

A win in an intermediate sprint may well give you a top ten in the tour, so this is fiercely fought over, with Mahac winning again, although Kananen catches just in time to sneak second from Valinin.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard11.jpg

As the 5 attackers come together the gap is 6'30" and there are 90km left to ride.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard12.jpg

The peloton seem organised today though, and with 30km to go, the gap is a manageable 2'45". The question is whether they can keep the pace up in the bunch?
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard13.jpg

Kananen wins this sprint from Burlutsky and Machac, meaning if he can stay in the lead group he is guaranteed third overall tomorrow.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard14.jpg

20km to go and the gap is still 1'45". The downhill run in could spoil it for the sprinters again.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard15.jpg

9km left and Valinin beats Machac and Zambrano to the climb the peloton are 50 seconds back, with a downhill to come. Valinin will also be in polkadots tomorrow.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard16.jpg

A Crash at the very front of the peloton may give the break more than a hope.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard17.jpg

It's carnage, 51 riders are on the floor
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard18.jpg

The peloton are shaken up and with 5km to go the gap is still a minute
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard19.jpg

Kananen has been on the front for a while and is selflessly giving one of his companions yellow
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard20.jpg

The sprint starts with 2.3km to go.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard21.jpg

Kananen is so strong though, he is just riding away from everyone
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard22.jpg

Burlutsky is now coming at him
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard23.jpg

Kananen is fading, as the bunch close in.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard24.jpg

And Burlutsky takes the win, Kananen's Cancellara like performance is enough for second in the stage and the overall.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard25.jpg

Hadou and Korkotyan are next, with the bunch swallowing up the gap at the end, Machac manages to hold onto fifth though.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/picard/picard26.jpg

O'Brian leads in the crashed group 3 minutes later, Samai is probably the biggest name here.
