A flat transitional stage today as we head southwards towards Madrid by way of the Bolo del Mundo. That is still to come though and today could be another chance for the breakaways or just maybe the sprinters having clambered with their depleted teams over most of the mountains can strike.
The break of the day numbers 10 riders and contains 4 or the bottom 8 on GC.
Joost Posthuma
Roman Kreuziger
Eric Berthou
Bradley Wiggins
Jakub Danacik
Daniel Teklehaimanot
Andrei Grivko
Thomas Frei
Jesse Sergent
Brent Bookwalter
are here to try and make something of the day.
The sprinters teams Bacardi, Carmuese and Nestle (for Hoffman) look to chase for a while but seem unable to reduce the gap.
As Danacek takes the first intermediate sprint ahead of Frei and Bertou,s two more riders come across to the break.
David Loosli
and
Tom Danielson
are those riders.
The break roll through the second sprint with Grivko getting the nod ahead of Wiggins and Bookwalter.
Meanwhile the sprinters teams have gone from the front as Santander come up in the last 100km keeping Madrazo out of trouble.
A quick look at the time check with 60km to go and the gap is 7 minutes, it looks like with the magic minute a 10km formula broken the gap is going to be difficult to catch.
It is a bit of a lumpy one in the finale and after Grivko and Posthume lead over the third sprint ahead of Sergent those two have to be the biggest threats in the break today.
Posthuma attacks solo with 17.5km to go.
Danielson and Loosli look briefly to try and join, Loosli gives up fairly quickly though. It is a long way out and the rest of the break have some decent roulers in there to give chase.
But Posthuma is a strong rider alone and he tucks in to try and get every second he can out of this move.
With 12.5km to go he has 26 seconds on Danielson and 44 seconds on the break (the pack is at 6 minutes). At 10km to go he has 40 seconds on Danielson but still just 48 seconds on the break.
It's a game of cat and mouse here, with Posthuma being the dangerman and as Danielson gets caught only Grivko and Danacek are working in the break.
With 5km to go the gap is 50 seconds, but Posthuma is beginning to lose a bit of power and Grivko begins to come back at the Jack Wolfskin rider.
With 2.5km left the gap is down to just 32 seconds, the riders are sitting behind Grivko as he starts to sprint.
Danacek, Kreuzinger, Berthou, Sergent and Frei are there with him as the others drop off.
Posthuma meanwhile has to try to hold it as they come into the finish 1500m to go his lead is down to just 16 seconds - has he misjudged his attack?
Grivko is riding the others off his wheel only Danacek and Kreuzinger can stick with him, it's a visable gap between Grivko and Posthuma.
Into the last kilometer Posthuma still has an okay lead, we go slightly uphill in the finish.
As Grivko who has done a lot of work fades it is clear that Posthuma has enough in the tank, to take a morale boosting win for Jack Wolfskin.
Kreuzinger nips past the other two for second, after doing little work to try and catch Posthuma. Grivko holds off Danacek for third and Berthou wins the sprint for fifth ahead of Sergent, Frei and Tekliehaimanot.
In the pack Roelandts wins the sprint for 13th ahead of Valverde and Hoffman (Van Stayen is 17th)
Stage results
Posthuma wins a second stage for Jack Wolfskin, he looked pretty good yesterday on the Angliru. Milka again close as were B&O, who considering they have only two riders left have done well for themselves.
