Vuelta a Guatemala Stage 8
mb2612
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat035.jpg
Carrara, Kiverlovski and Lovkvist are favourites, but this stage will be all about who can time their attack best although Laverde Jiminez will no doubt try to solve this problem by attacking at every opportunity. It will be interesting to see how the pure climbers manage today.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat215.jpg

We have a circuit at the start today as 6 riders kick off the attacks
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat217.jpg

5 more join them
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat218.jpg

Cimolai jumps away to win the sprint, Hirschlein and Vink are next
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat219.jpg

The whole break is pulled back though.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat220.jpg

This circuit is quick, and the next sprint comes along in no time, with Hirschlein leading through Vink, Montana, Raisin, Petrie-Armstrong, Jeandesbosz, Cimolai, Tolleson and Hutchings. It will be surprising if the peloton give Rasin to much time, although this race has not exactly been controlled so far.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat221.jpg

As the break leave the circuit to start the climb they have a 4'21" lead and 48km left to ride. however if they can get over the mountain 25km away then they will have a good shot of holding on till the finish.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat223.jpg

Raisin, Vink, Petrie-Armstrong at the sprint. the gap is still 4 min and there are now 40km to race.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat224.jpg

As we hit the climb 28 riders drop off the peloton immediately, Stetina and Jeannesson both miss the split.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat225.jpg

The peloton kindly wait for them though.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat226.jpg

It's bad news for Saab as Lovkvist punctures near the top.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat227.jpg

Raisin leads Vink and Tolleson over the top as the break has pretty much stayed together.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat228.jpg

The peloton are exactly 2 minutes behind, I doubt they will catch them with the downhill now.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat229.jpg

Lovkvist is 1'20" back on the bunch
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat230.jpg

Now Paulinho, Nazaret and Peterson attack
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat231.jpg

Peterson fails, but now Kiverlovski is forced to counter. Voecker and Navarro follow
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat232.jpg

The pressure causes Orozco to be dropped
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat233.jpg

Hollister pull back the attackers but the break are 1'20" ahead as they go under the 10km banner ahead.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat234.jpg

Paulinho, Nazaret and Navarro all attack again
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat235.jpg

Jeannesson follows as they try to get clear of the peloton.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat237.jpg

Hollister again pull them back, but the break still have their minutes lead with 7km to go.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat238.jpg

Navarro attacks again.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat239.jpg

There is no response, so Evans follows
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat240.jpg

Evans gets nowhere, but now Laverde Jiminez goes for it.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat241.jpg

Navarro has made it to the break, where Raisin is waiting. This is very dangerous for Hollister,
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat242.jpg

Evans, Diaz Corrales and Vasquez follow Laverde Jiminez
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat243.jpg

Now Kisverlovski attacks
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat244.jpg

Everyone is pretty much together as the sprint starts, Raisin is leading it out.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat245.jpg

Raisin sits up so Hutchings goes for Division 2 glory, Vink and Jeandesbosz are in his wheel.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat246.jpg

Tolleson moves into the lead
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat247.jpg

Raisin and Navvaro are following him
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat248.jpg

Tolleson is quickest though and he takes an excellent victory.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat249.jpg

Raisin and Navarro are next to make it a good day for Emu Export.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat250.jpg

Hirschlein also holds off the peloton, before Voekler comes in 5th.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat251.jpg

Vasquez looses a minute in the sprint
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat252.jpg

Although he still beats his teammate Ortega and best young rider Stetina
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat253.jpg

Orozco meanwhile looses over 2 minutes
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat254.jpg

Amazingly Lovkvist gained 1'30" in the final 10km to get back into the peloton. He could well be very dangerous in the days to come.

So, the top 3 stay the same, but Lovkvist has shown serious strength not to lose time. This race is balanced on a knife edge.

D2 watch: Hutchings fades to 11th in the sprint, although that is still a result he can be pleased with, while Laverde Jiminez jumps Stetina and Orozco to move up to 9th.
