Vuelta a Guatemala Stage 3
mb2612
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/guat/Guat029.jpg
We have mountains and Nazaret, Lovkvist and Carrara are the favourites for today, but with two of them already lost time this could be anyones game.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat061.jpg

4 riders in the break today: Vink, Voekler, Serrano and Colex.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat062.jpg

Voekler, Serrano and Colex is the order through the first sprint.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat063.jpg

Colex wins the climb from Voekler and Serrano, but the mountains jersey will be decided on todays big climbs.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat064.jpg

Serrano is in good sprinting form here, and he wins the seconds sprint from Voekler and Vink
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat065.jpg

A split on a small sharp climb 85km from the finish and Nazaret misses out again, with Shapira and 14 others.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat066.jpg

Serrano wins sprint 3 as well, Voekler and Colex are next.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat067.jpg

We start climbing with 46km to go in the peloton, the gap is 4'27" to the break, while the Nazaret group is 2 minutes back.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat068.jpg

Nazaret is closing the gap, and goes past Carrara, who has dropped back to protect Petrie-Armstrong.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat069.jpg

35km to go and Vaquez attacks to make up ground.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat070.jpg

Hollister are still controlling it for Davis, so are happy to give him a gap.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat071.jpg

Nazaret pulls Carrara and Shapira back with 33km to go.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat072.jpg

Vasquez is flying, he pulls back Vink and now has 2 minutes 40 seconds on the peloton.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat073.jpg

Hollister are setting a solid pace for Davis, and with no one else wanting to work, Vasquez moves 3'40" clear and into provisional yellow.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat074.jpg

Vasquez is flying up this hill, 27km to go and he is 5'27" clear. Hollister has given this away.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat075.jpg

Finally Saab send someone up to work.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat076.jpg

Stetina attacks as the peloton goes through the 27km mark and the gap is down to 4'40"
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat077.jpg

Davis cracks, Szmyd drops back to help.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat078.jpg

Lovkvist follows Stetina
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat079.jpg

Paulinho, Carrara and Kiverlovski attack. Vespa and Hollister have decided their leaders can work for themselves now.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat081.jpg

Emu Export are now working hard for either Orozco or Nazaret. They have 6 riders in this group of 22. Pity there are 9 riders up the road.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat082.jpg

Vasquez solos over the top.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat083.jpg

Voekler and Colex are next at +1'32"
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat084.jpg

Emu Export caught the attackers, so they attack again.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat085.jpg

Serrano holds on for 4th over the top ahead of Stetina, Lovkivst, Kiverlovski and Carrara at +4'20"
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat086.jpg

Paulinho leads the peloton over 20 seconds later.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat087.jpg

Vasquez goes over the next climb, taking the mountains jersey, it's just the downhill to go.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat089.jpg

Colex has dropped Voekler although is now 2'16" back.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat090.jpg

Lovkvist, Navarro, Kiverlovski, Jeannesson and Carrara attack
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat091.jpg

Over the top they are all together, but are 4'14" back and need to take eighty seconds on the downhill to stop Vasquez getting yellow.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat092.jpg

Down the hill not much happens, and Vasquez celebrates a massive victory, the mountains jersey, and potentially the overall lead as well.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat093.jpg

Colex holds onto second by inches over the peloton, Navarro is third, with Eltink and Stetina next. Colex is the man who will challenge Vasquez for the overall.
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat094.jpg

Davis comes in 7 minutes down, with his team allowing Vasquez back into the race in the process. But did they give him the yellow jersey?
i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m584/mb261289/Guat095.jpg

The gap: 3'19". The new leader: Vasquez. What a ride by that man.

D2 watch: Laverde Jimenez was the last man dropped on the final mini-climb, loosing 1'40" on the lead group, but moving up to 15th overall due to plenty of the riders who beat him missing out yesterday. The aim will presumably be for him to keep a top 20 position.
