SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage 1: Prospect - Clare (149km)

img806.imageshack.us/img806/6273/pcm9.jpg

Thanks guys. Typically the Santos Tour Down Under is a sprinters course, yet this time the 5th stage finishes on top of the Willunga Hill. The RadioShack Nissan Trek team therefore brought besides Bennati also a couple of specialists for hilly stages (Bakelants and Hermans). And of course a couple of local guys.

Van Impe was the first rider to try to get in a breakaway. He rode a couple of minutes alone in front of the pack. Ignatiev and Docker linked up with Van Impe a little later, but when another 10 riders tried to make the jump to the leading group the pack woke up and increase the pace before the attackers could get a substantial gap. With 117 kilometers to go Ignatiev, Napolitano, Van Impe, Docker, Oss, Bouhanni, Day and Roulston have a 51" lead on Roberts, Van Poppel, Mondory, Cimolai and Felline and a 1'41" lead on the pack.

At 110 kilometers before the finish both leading groups unite and also the Euskaltel riders Sicard and Urtasun join the leading group. When also Ligthard joins the attackers the organization in the leading group starts to fail. The pack approached fast and several riders attempted to break away. Eventually all attackers are caught with more than 90 kilometers to go. Casper and Nizzolo are the next ones to attack and they get somewhat more space from the pack. Casper easily won the intermediate sprint before Nizzolo, while the pack followed at almost four minutes. Casper is clearly the better climber of the leading duo and also took the mountain sprint before Nizzolo.

img59.imageshack.us/img59/7629/pcm11.jpg

With 50 kilometers to go the pack woke up and especially Cofidis and BMC placed several riders up front to wheel in the escape group. Also the second intermediate sprint was an easy prey for Casper. With 45 kilometers to go they still had a 3 minute lead on the pack. The gap was a little too small to make it to the finish without any problems. Cavendish won the last points in the second intermediate sprint. In front of the race Casper had left Nizzolo behind. The young Italian hadn't done any work in the last kilometers and was in a little outside of his league. Nizzolo was caught by the pack 25 kilometers before the finish. Casper than still had a 1'40" lead on the pack. At 15 kilometers before the finishline also Casper was caught. As expected it was going to be a mass sprint.

The Garmin squad set up the leading sprint train and perfectly launched Haussler. He finished it superbly and took the first stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. Both Casper and Nizzolo finished behind the pack and fell out of the general standings despite scoring the bonus seconds along the way.

Tough start but it's really hard to win without top shaped riders in extreme.

Good luck for the rest Wink

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage 2: Lobethal - Stirling (148 km)

img163.imageshack.us/img163/2930/pcm15.jpg

Thanks a lot. Stage 2 of the Tour Down Under is quite hilly in the last section and therefore Hermans and Bakelants had set their minds on this stage. In the race Bakelants didn't feel well and he did the dirty work for Hermans, who indeed managed to get into the leading group at the very end of the race.

Travis Meyer and Gusev were the first riders to attack. Taborra, Oss and Bozic followed a little later in the attack, as Garmin - Barracuda increased the pace of the pack. Also RadioShack Nissan Trek has place Sergent to make pace in the pack in order for Bennati and Nizzolo to participate in the intermediate sprint. Sergent slipped and fell in a difficult corner resulting in a complete disorganization of the chase. Meyer won the first intermediate sprint before Bozic, Taborre, Oss, Gusev, Saramontins, Day and Ligthart, while Hermans, Hinault and Delage followed at 56". The pack followed at 1'09" and has stepped up the pace.

img840.imageshack.us/img840/7285/pcm16.jpg

As several attempts to make the jump to the leading group follow each other rapidly, the pace is very high and the breakaway did not get more than a minute. However, at the Fox Creek Road, Day accelerates and quickly the lead of the attackers on the pack increased to 2 minutes. Eventually he took the mountain sprint before Saramontins and Bozic.

img820.imageshack.us/img820/9193/pcm17.jpg

Oss takes the second intermediate sprint of the day at Onkaparinga Valley Road before Ligthart and Meyer. The gap with the pack at that point had increased to 4 minutes, but would quickly increase to 6 minutes as the pack didn't seem to be willing to respond. The pack got into action quite late and with 50 kilometers to go and a difficult last section of the stage the lead of the attackers was still over four minutes. JJ Haedo had fallen and dropped back from the pack. His chances for a good classification are over.

With 25 kilometers the pace of the pack is very high on the difficult terrain. Several riders are dropping back rapidly. At 8 kilometers before the finish the attackers are caught. Day and Ligthart were not ready to give up yet and give it another go.

img822.imageshack.us/img822/553/pcm19.jpg

Day quickly left Ligthart behind, while Sorensen, Devolder, Hermans and Haussler escaped from the pack at 6 kilometers before the finish.

img191.imageshack.us/img191/940/pcm20.jpg

Day eventually was caught and it was a group with Tankink, Van Avermaet, Hermans, Devolder, Sorensen, Porte, Haussler, Grivko and Ciolek that was going to sprint for the finish with the pack only 31" behind them.

img696.imageshack.us/img696/6927/pcm21.jpg

Suprisingly it was Tankink who was fastest in the sprint before Van Avermaet and Hermans.

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage 3: Unley - Victor Harbour (134 km)

img267.imageshack.us/img267/8568/pcm24.jpg

The current position of Ben Hermans indeed poses a nice possibility to score well in the general standings of the Tour Down Under. However, key will be the 5th stage, which finishes on top of Willunga Hill. Expectations are that the gaps will be bigger there and who does well on Willunga Hill will take the Tour Down Under. For now it is important not to sustain any damage and keep Ben Hermans in the front of the pack untill the finish.

Van Impe, Herrada, Guardini and Napolitano were the first riders to attack, immediately on the small climb directly after the start of the stage. Clarke, Bennett and Perez quickly made the jump to the leading group when the pace of the pack decreased. Roberts also joined the attackers. With 110 kilometers to go a group with Van Impe, Perez, Guarnieri, Herrada, Roberts, Bennett, Napolitano, Krivtsov and Clarke had a 1'09" lead on Hinault and Rasch, a 2'03" lead on Brammeier and Vaitkus and a 2'32" lead on the pack.

A little below 100 kilometers before the finish Vaitkus, Brammeier, Hinault, Rasch, Kristoff, Parrinello and Kriit join the attacks, which now have only a 1'35" lead on the pack. Napolitano wins the mountain sprint at Sellicks Hill before Vaitkus, Hinault, Brammeier and Guarnieri, while the pack had almost closed the gap with the attackers.

img690.imageshack.us/img690/2005/pcm26.jpg

With 85 kilometers to go all attackers were caught. As a result the sprinters were able to compete for the intermediate sprint at Mount Compass. It was won by Cavendish before Greipel and Bos.

img813.imageshack.us/img813/6683/pcm27.jpg

Hoogerland fell of his bike and dropped back to another group of riders which dropped back at the Sellicks Hill. His changes to get a good score at the Tour Down Under seemed to be over. Also the second intermediate sprint at Goolwa was won by Cavendish before Greipel and Bos. These were clearly the fastest riders in the race.

img545.imageshack.us/img545/8042/pcm28.jpg

It is going to be a mass sprint as with the strong wind nobody was able to break away anymore. Or was even trying to break away. The pace was high and the pack broke into several pieces. A group of only about 50 riders remained in the front of the race. Porte was not one of them. It was Haussler who was the fastest in the sprint. He clearly is the man in form and who had a little energy to spare as the leader of the general standings was not participating in the intermediate sprints. Moreover with the small uphill section right before the finish line caused several riders to burn up quickly. Dumoulin finished second and Ciolek third.

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage 4: Norwood - Tanunda (130 km)

img845.imageshack.us/img845/3879/pcm31.jpg

Quite a flat stage which typically would have finished in a mass sprint. Especially with so many good sprinters at the start. Strategy for the RadioShack Nissan Trek team was to have one rider in front and thereby avoid having to do a lot of work to bring back the pack. Hermans would be protected and kept in front of the pack and in case of a mass sprint, Bennati would be the guy for the job.

Felline was the first rider to set up a breakaway. Rasch, Urtasun, Guarnieri, Impey, Taborre, Clarke, Bakelants and Sijmens followed. They did not get away and were readily caught by the pack. Taborre gave it another shot. Urtasun, Hinault and Nizzolo followed. And a little later also Vaitkus and Ponzi.

Taborre took the first intermediate sprint at Kersbrook before Nizzolo and Urtasun. The pack followed at 1'33".

img593.imageshack.us/img593/7967/pcm33.jpg

Urtasun wins the mountain sprint at Smith Hill before Hinault, Vaitkus, Taborre and Ponzi. Nizzolo has dropped back to 28" and a group with Bouhanni, Sijmens, Vigano and Felline followed at 53". The pack was 2'24" behind on the top of the Smith Hill.

img688.imageshack.us/img688/2983/pcm34.jpg

Taborre also took the second intermediate sprint at Mount Pleasant. Urtasun followed in second, Nizzolo in third. Together with Vaitkus, Hinault, Felline, Bouhanni, Sijmens, Ponzi and Vigano they have a 5'07" lead on the pack. Taborre is the best rider in the general standings at 43rd position at 2'56" behind Hausler.

The lead of the attackers increased to 7 minutes but than was quickly reduced to 5 minutes with still 50 kilometers to go. At Menglers Hill Hinault attacked. He wanted to secure the climbers jersey. He took the prize before Taborre, Vaitkus and Sijmens. At 20"Vigano and Felline followed. Nizzolo, Ponzi, Urtasun and Bouhanni were 39" behind, while the pack has picked up some speed and followed at 2'53".

Once more the pack broke into pieces and Cavendish and Boonen were not in the front section. With 5 kilometers to go the attackers still had a 53" lead on Hoogerland, Garcia and Costa. The pack was still 1'22" behind and didn't seem to be going to make it.

Ponzi won the sprint of the leading group before Vaitkus, Sijmens, Hinault, Urtasun, Felline, Bouhanni, Taborre, Vigano and Nizzolo. The pack followed at '45".
