The first set of mountain stages are over and we have a run of four flattish stages as the Vuelta heads northwards to the Pyrenees.
Today's stage is a fairly long one and it is difficult to say whether it will be one for a breakaway or one that will end in a sprint. Certainly before the mountains began we had two sprints and despite the eliminations there is probably the firepower in the pack to chase. There are a few more teams without a sprinter or a high GC man also though so expect plenty of break attempts.
We get attacks from the gun Jakub Danacik leads them as we head uphill for our first intermediate sprint.
Joining him at this stage is
Evgeni Sokolov
José Antonio Baños Ballester
Benoît Vaugrenard
Thomas De Gendt
Danilo Di Luca
Eric Berthou
Ethan Weiss
Mauro Facci
Aleksej Kunshin
Brent Bookwalter
The first sprint sees Vaugranard take it ahead of Banos Ballester and Kunshin. Now we are at the seventh stage and these sprints are becoming increasingly worthless and the riders know it as they just simply roll through them.
The stage win though is still prized and Webeffect are really fearful of a break having its own way and are chasing this down. Surprisingly Emanuele Sella is being used to chase riders down.
Another break goes away though as soon as it's caught containing Weiss, Danacek, Vaugranard, Di Luca, Berthou,Banos Ballester, Kunshin, De Gendt, Bookwalter and Sokolov from the original break as well as four new faces:
David Loosli
Matej Mugerli
Florian Stalder
and
Antonio Colom Mas
Again the intermediate sprint causes barely a ripple of excitemnet within the break with Stalder rolling through ahead of Banos Ballester and Sokolov. The break has established itself now and lead the pack by four or so minutes with 100km to go.
The third sprint see's Loosli roll over first ahead of Kunshin and Stalder but more importantly the gap with 75km to go is six minutes. This is going to be a test to chase down over this rolling terrain. Webeffect are still at the chasing with Carmuese playing their hand also.
As the kilometres count off so does the breaks lead, with 40km to go the gap is 3.30 and 20km to go it is down to 1.30. Despite some late digs it is comfortably caught as you can see Sella is the man making the catch.
The two teams who have chased today have been Webeffect and Carmuese and as you would expect both teams try to start trains Webeffect go with Rodrigues, Bontenackets and Avelino whereas Carmuese go with Weylandt, Caethoven and Roelandts.
Mark Cavendish takes a big gamble by going with the unproven Webeffect train. Whereas the dangerous Michael Van Stayen goes with the Carmuese win along with just about every other sprinter in the race:
Maximiliano Richeze
Tyler Farrar
Dan Holloway
Nolan Hoffman
and
Juan Pablo Forero
As we hit 3km to go, it is clear that Carmuese have got this sprint train thing well oiled.
Realising that Roelandts is the wheel of choice Avelino, Van Stayen and Cavendish follow the Belgians wheel closely.
Cameron Meyer has got up to Cavendish's wheel.
The failed Webeffect train riders sweep across blocking Holloway and Forero, the red jersey of Angel Madrazo has popped into view also.
As they approach the kite Holloway has pulled himself, Hoffman, Forero and Alejandro Valverde forward.
Van Stayen decides to kick on as Roelandts is waiting to the last minute to make his move, Avelino as ever seems to have no extra acceleration. Meanwhile Holloway, Hoffman are coming around squeezing Cavendish for room.
Roelandts starts to move but he isn't making any impression at all only looing to hold off Holloway and Hoffman. Up front Richeze and Farrar have been towed by Van Stayen away.
Neither can attempt to come round and the Bacardo rider takes his second stage win of the race and likely the points jersey to boot.
Farrar pips Richeze for second, which isn't a bad result at all for a rider considered a lead out at the beginning of the race. Roelandts holds for 4th and Cavendish squeezed through for 5th.
Hoffman is 6th, Holloway 7th, Valverde 8th and Madrazo comes home for 9th ahead of Avelino, Caethoven and Forero.
Stage results
A straight forward sit behind the best sprint train win for Van Stayen. Roelandts let his team down a bit there.

No changes to report here, it was a nice easy day off for the classification riders. Valverde and Madrazo got involved in the sprint.

Points
Van Stayen takes ther jersey, you fancy he will have to keep winning or at least podiuming these sprints with Madrazo and Valverde involving themselves in chasing stage ending points. Roelandts and Cavendish still have chances but will need to win some stages.
