Giro d'Italia - Stage 12
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-1.jpg

Today’s stage is pan flat for almost the entire day, with only a few bumps along the way that shouldn’t provide much of a challenge. At 184km it is fairly long, but regardless, this seems like a typical sort of transitional stage that should end in a bump sprint. As such i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss is without a doubt the favourite to take another stage.

The attacks today are started off by a man whose name should by now be familiar to everyone - i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png José Antonio Baños Ballester, the winner of the third stage of this Giro and second place from the break yesterday. This is his fourth breakaway attempt.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-2.jpg

Straight onto his wheel are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.png Moletta and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Quinziato. Quinziato won yesterday’s stage from the breakaway and is clearly willing to try it again. It happens to be his third day in a row in the break.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-3.jpg

The peleton doesn’t have any trouble with these riders, so they start to form a gap. Bridging up them are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.png Reimer
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ubs.png Chtioui
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/jackwolfskin.png Vaugrenard
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Stenersen

All 7 men form the break of the day. This is Chtioui’s fifth break of the race so far.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-4.jpg

Throughout the day not a great deal happens, as was expected. The peleton is immensely lethargic today and no one really looks interested in following. Bacardi sit on the front for most of the day and get some help from Wikipedia, but no one really pushes the pace. The gap eventually climbs beyond the 10 minute mark and at that point Wikipedia also stop working. It appears that things are unlikely to end up in a bunch sprint.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-5.jpg

Through the intermediate sprint today, Moletta leads the group over, ahead of Vuagrenard and Stenersen. The gap by this point is over 15 minutes, which is okay because no one here is anywhere even close on GC. It is likely that the peleton wants to conserve energy ahead of the Grosseglockner tomorrow.

With 17km remaining in the race, Quinziato and Baños Ballester attack away from their breakaway companions. Both men have proven their form so far this Giro by winning stages and none of the others seem willing to fire. Onto the front of the chase group is Vaugrenard.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-6.jpg

Vaugrenard doesn’t seem to be getting much help from the others though, and the lead two pull out over a minute with a fair amount of ease. Under the 5km to go banner, the gap is out to 1’17”.

Baños Ballester looks tired on Quinziato’s wheel on the run in to the line. He has been racing hard all Giro.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-7.jpg

With 600m to go, however, he launches himself! What a great bluff! Can he win this now?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-8.jpg

Yes he can! What a superb result from this little-known Spanish rider!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-9.jpg

Quinziato just misses out on back-to-back stage victories. Meanwhile, the chasing group comes through 51” later, lead by Reimer. Stenersen is 4th ahead of Moletta, then Chtioui and finally Vaugrenard, who had to do most of the chasing on the run-in.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-10.jpg

In the peleton, the pace has increased somewhat and both Guerao and Goss are being lead out by their teams for 8th place.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-11.jpg

In the end Rowe proves to be faster than both and he comes in 8th, ahead of Guerao and then Loddo.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro12-12.jpg

No major changes today in the jerseys. Baños Ballester moves up into third on points, however. It is also worth noticing that in the team classification, Vespa have pulled out a big lead over Vesuvio thanks to Quinziato being in the break today as well. Don’t expect tomorrow to remain unchanged as the riders face the mighty Grosseglockner!
