Delta Tour Zeeland - Stage 3
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-1.jpg

And now for the final stage of the race that should decide the overall. There are 12 cobbled sections over 188km and winning this stage should pretty much guarantee victory. The bookmakers are tipping:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/het.png Gorik Gardeyn
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/upc.png Rik Kavsek
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/telekom.png Arturs Ansons
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/kingspan.png Elia Rigotto
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/upc.png Thomas Berkhout
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/samsung.png Daniel Thorsen
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/metinvest.png Antonio Bucciero
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pivorana.png Marco Fabbri
So it appears that the bookmakers think that it may well come down to a bunch sprint. Do they know something that the riders don’t? Are the short cobbled sections not going to be enough to break up the race?

The first five men to attack on this rainy day are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/finnair.png Pajari
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/eurovision.png Prestia
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/cativen.png Rincon
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/enrc.png Dang
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/gazprom.png Wellens

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-2.jpg

Wellens is a real threat here, being one of the better cobblers out on course today. Clearly his background in cyclocross means he likes the rough weather today. Seeing a real chance, more riders try to come across:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/skoda.png Machac
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/amex.png Hasnaoui
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vodafone.png Norris
img543.imageshack.us/img543/6995/delhaize.png Girardi
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bic.png De Souza
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tyskie.png Colin

But these 6 are dragged back in because Colin is a real threat over the rough terrain. The next ones who try are largely the same. Machac, Hasnaoui, Norris and De Souza try again and are joined by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/telekom.png Debusschere, who is also a threat. These 5 manage to pull out a bit of a gap and are joied by three more riders:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pivorana.png Geluykens
img543.imageshack.us/img543/6995/delhaize.png Van Hoecke
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tyskie.png Colin

Colin clearly isn’t shy to give it another go. These three pace themselves up to the other 5, and then the two bigger groups combine in to one group of 13 leaders just before the first sprint. At the sprint it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/finnair.png Pajari who takes the bonus seconds, ahead of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/eurovision.png Prestia and then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/gazprom.png Wellens.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-3.jpg

But that doesn’t put an end to the attacks, as three more riders work their way up to the leaders. They are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/enrc.png Kupeshov
img543.imageshack.us/img543/6995/delhaize.png Girardi
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/kingspan.png Harvey

16 riders up front with a couple that are real threats is just too much for the pack to handle, and at the start of the first cobbled section the gap is down to 51”.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-4.jpg

By the end of this section everyone is back together and a new break must be formed. The first man to give it a go is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/telekom.png Spasic.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-5.jpg

He is quickly joined by 6 more rides, and they are:
img543.imageshack.us/img543/6995/delhaize.png Girardi
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/skoda.png Jasniskiewicz
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tyskie.png Colin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vodafone.png Norris
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/cativen.png Rincon
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pivorana.png Sribar

Colin just won’t say no to being in the break today and is clearly feeling really strong.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-6.jpg

Going over the second early cobbled section, img543.imageshack.us/img543/6995/delhaize.png Van Hoecke and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/enrc.png Dang start to come across the gap as Colin comes to the front of the lead group. Neither of them are hugely powerful so they struggle a bit to get across quickly.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-7.jpg

Coming through the middle section of the race, with a gap of 2’46”, the serious attacks begin. First out of the gate are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/amex.png Veyt and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bic.png Robert. Robert could certainly be a real threat to the big favourites if he gets a good lead.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-8.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/adecco.png Duclos-Lassalle and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/upc.png Hassink are the next riders who look to try something.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-9.jpg

Not wanting to miss out, Nieuwsblad send forward i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/het.png Hovelynck in the hope of marking the breakaway.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-10.jpg

With 70km left to race all the riders out front except for Hovelynck have joined up. The gap has remained remarkably steady, with no one really increasing the pace in the group but the break not able to pull out much more. Suddenly, the pack splits, leaving behind 40 riders, including quite a number of sprinters.

Sensing an opportunity, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/het.png Van de Ginst tries to get out of the bunch. Maybe this was why Hovelynck was sent up the road? Regardless, Van der Ginst isn’t given any room to move and is brought back into the bunch.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-11.jpg

At the second intermediate sprint, Hassink takes the points ahead of Robert and Veyt. Clearly the Delhaize duo of Van Hoecke and Girardi are on the rivet and they are both dropped from the lead group.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-12.jpg

With 33 to go, the leaders enter the second last cobbled stage. Hovelynck has caught the two Delhaize riders. The situation is:

1’05”1’31”
Leaders --->Chasers --->Peleton (69)

Hovelynck drops the other two riders and carries on alone, but he too is caught with 22km to go. The gap is down to 1’48”.

But with 14km to go, and the gap at 1’07”, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/het.png Van de Ginst once again seeks to shake things up as he attacks out of the bunch towards the leaders.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-13.jpg

He joins into the leaders just as the final cobbled section starts. There is 10km to go, with a 54” lead it could go either way at this point.

Then as the peleton reaches the final section, there is a massive crash!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-14.jpg

There is a massive crash and only 25 riders manage to avoid it, and not many of the favourites are in this new group. Unsurprisingly, with all the confusion and the slowed pace, the gap to the break starts to widen. It looks like the winner will come from the front 11.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-15.jpg

The order of the first 7 riders in the sprint is as follows:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/upc.png Hassink
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/het.png Van der Ginst
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/adecco.png Duclos-Lassalle
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/amex.png Veyt
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pivorana.png Sribar
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/samsung.png Robert
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tyskie.png Colin

The winner of this sprint will take the overall thanks to the bonus seconds, so there is everything to play for.

From a fair way out, Robert comes around Sribar at speed, with Colin on his wheel. Robert has so much speed and he is looking fantastic!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-16.jpg

Hassink starts to seriously fade and Van der Ginst launches his own burst for the line. His legs are clearly much fresher as he quickly comes past Robert.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-17.jpg

And the sprint proves decisive as Van der Ginst takes the day for the unstoppable Nieuwsblad team.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-18.jpg

Veyt had a great late sprint and came in 2nd, and Robert will have to be content with a 3rd place. Colin is 4th, followed by Duclos-Lassalle, then Hassink, Sribar is 7th , Norris comes through 8th, Janiszkiewicz is 9th and Rincon rounds out the top 10.

A minute later the shattered bunch comes through, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/het.png Chedhomme leading them home.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Delta3-19.jpg

A great result once again for Het Nieuwsblad, and AMEX will be pleased with a 2nd place overall on the flat. UPC could only manage a 5th on GC for Hassink. Pivovarna is rewarded with the team competition.
