Giro d'Italia - Stage 10
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-1.jpg

Today is about as simple as any of the stages get in this Giro. It is a mere a 158km in length, with only one mountain prime along the way, which gives 5/3/1. The final 25km of the race are a very gentle incline that averages around 1%, and never really peaks much higher than this. Unsurprisingly the sprinters are hotly tipped and it will be a matter of seeing whether anyone can beat i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Matt Goss, who is on fine form at the Giro this year.

Just like in stage 8, the attacks are started by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Viktor Renäng. Sony Ericcson have Grillo as their sprinter here but they don’t want to put all their eggs in one basket.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-2.jpg

He is followed straight away by:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png Baños Ballester
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/nestle.png Broco
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.png Wiggins

These riders have all spent time in breaks during this race, with Baños Ballester even taking a stage win because of it. These four all get together before another four riders seek to bridge up. They are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/jackwolfskin.png Vaugrenard
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Bernaudeau
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png Tendero
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png H. Machado

Clearly Colombia are keen to try the same thing as they did on the third stage, because they have put the same three riders in the break.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-3.jpg

Despite the efforts of these three Colombia riders, the gap starts to come down. The peleton is clearly wise to what they are trying to do. Despite the increased, pace, however, several riders try to get away. Their names are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Quinziato
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.png Reimer
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ubs.png Chtioui
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/milka.png Malori
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Lang
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/nestle.png Schär

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-4.jpg

Naturally, this is far too many riders and within a short period of time everyone is caught. As the peleton starts the only categorised climb of the day things are all together. At this point 10 riders from the various breaks decide that they want to try again to get away. The only riders who have already tried who don’t join this break are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.png Wiggins, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png Machado, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/nestle.png Broco and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Lang.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-5.jpg

Over the top of the climb Tendero leads, ahead of Reimer and Quinziato. None of these riders are likely to challenge for the mountain jersey, which seems like it is destined to fall to one of the GC riders.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-6.jpg

A lot of riders really seem to think this will come down to a breakaway win, which is understandable coming the day after a big mountain stage. As such some more riders try to bridge across. They are:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Christensen
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/nestle.png Broco
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png Machado
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.png Wiggins
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Traficante
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Lang

As can be seen, the four riders from earlier today who missed out are happy to give it another go. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Pearl and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Wiggle are clearly less than happy with this, however, and so they shut the attack down. It doesn’t take long before four of these riders try again. This time it is just:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/nestle.png Broco
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png Machado
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.png Wiggins
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Vespa.png Traficante

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-7.jpg

They put in a truly determined effort and with 52km raced, a 14 man break is allowed to form. The peleton clearly believes that they can reel in this many riders.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-8.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Santander, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/carmeuse.png Carmeuse and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia all share out the work pretty well, and the i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bacardi.png Bacardi team will be happy to take a day off after having to chase for several days in a row now. The break get a maximum gap of only 5’40”, which shows the determination these three teams were showing.

By the time the sprint point rolls up, with about 60km remaining, the lead is down to 4’36”. None of the breakaway riders show any interest in the sprint points, so Tendero leads Broco over and Malori takes third.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-9.jpg

With about 35km left to rider, Traficante punctures whilst in the break. This is far from what Vespa want, but Traficante nevertheless sits up and waits for the peleton.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-10.jpg

Before he drops straight back into the bunch, however, there is an attack. This time it is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Kruijswijk, who has been one of the most aggressive riders of the entire Giro thus far.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-11.jpg

After being 2nd on stage 8 he is clearly out for a win through another strong attack. He joins up with Traficante and together they slowly but surely bridge up to the lead group. They join in with 21km left to rider. The now 15 man break holds a lead of only 1’14”.

Realising that the break’s days are numbered, Lang tries to go alone.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-12.jpg

Quinziato manages to neutralise this attack, and he then attacks himself. He is joined by Vaugrenard, Machado and Schär. However, even this attack is doomed to failure as with 9km remaining the break is caught and everyone is back together.

Santander and Carmeuse have set up well. That said, Bos is nowhere to be seen and Carmeuse instead seem to be looking for Weylandt to come up with the result today. Wikipedia has numbers near the front, but Goss is further back, being lead forward by Vangheel.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-13.jpg

With 5km to go Arroyo comes off the front, leaving Santander with 2 more lead-out riders. The order is this:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Del Nero
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Merino Criado
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Guerao
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Grillo
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Goss
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Guarnieri
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/nestle.png Hoffman
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Rowe

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-14.jpg

The slight incline makes it hard for some of the sprinters to hold wheels at this speed, and so Guarnieri drops off the pace and Hoffman can’t quite close the gap to Goss.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-15.jpg

With 2km left, however, Hoffman has closed that gap but Merino Criado must come off the front, forcing Guerao to start his sprint from a very long way out.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-16.jpg

Sensing some weakness in Guerao, Goss comes around him with a kilometre remaining.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-17.jpg

Hoffman just can’t compete with that and he is ridden off Goss’ wheel. Goss is in mighty form today.

And what’s this?! On the right, none other than Ricardo Ricco is surging! He is taking advantage of the slight incline and his own powerful kick to come storming forward.

Rowe just can’t seem to come around Hoffman, and Grillo finally comes around Guerao at speed.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-18.jpg

Goss takes an absolutely outstanding victory. He can sit up well before the line and cruise in with his arms held high.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro10-19.jpg

Hoffman holds on for a great result in second place. Ricco somehow manages to just beat Rowe by taking third place. Grillo is in fifth, just behind Rowe. Guerao keeps his speed for a still-disappointing 6th. Merino Criado found a second wind and is in 7th. Carrara, Del Nero and Guarnieri round out the top 10.

Though there are no major changes in the jerseys, Ricco once again performs on terrain that shouldn’t really suit him and this earns him a handful of bonus seconds. Goss moves up to third in the points competition and will hope to solidify a strong result there over the next couple of stages.
