It's a flat stage surely for the sprinters today and the last one until the final day that really suits them with lumpy stuff and a time trial to come.
Not many really fancy a break but one fellow seems obsessed here in Cali, perhaps there he wishes to attract attention from someone in Hollywood?
Whatever the reason,
Juan-Antonio Flecha
is in his third successive breakaway!
He just has two companions
Andrew Fenn
and
Jempy Drucker
The veteren Spanish rider Flecha started the day 1.10 down on race leader
Pierrick Fédrigo
and he improves his GC hopes by taking the three sprints over Drucker and Fenn. But whilst having the virtual lead for much of the day, it is proving an easy break to control for Nestle.
With the gap starting to get to within a quick bridging distance we see
Marcel Sieberg
trying to go for it once again.
But there is just too many sprinters teams involved and Wedeffect are proving the most keen, not that
Óscar Avelino
did anything startling yesterday or on any other day for that matter.
To be fair Avelino's teammates soon disappeared in the last 10 kilometers yesterday but today
Fabio Silvestre
and
Kris Boeckmans
stick around.
Tyler Farrar
Francisco Ventoso
and
Romain Vanderbiest
are right there with Avelino. With the likes of
Anthony Lavoine
Allan Davis
Raúl Granjel Cabrera
and
Matt Rowe
quite close.
The turns are tight on 90 degree angles and the roads in Modesto are fairly narrow, sure enough
Jerome Coppel
along with many others go down hard creating a huge block across the road.
It's a nasty incident with a few riders following going down so hard their race is going to be over.
Anthony Delaplace
Matej Mugerli
Juan Carlos Rienda Segura
Thomas Rohregger
and
Niels Scheunemann
are out of the Tour of California.
No big GC favourites are out of the race but a high number are caught behind as a group of just 33 riders are left ahead.
GC men up here are
Taylor Phinney
Andrei Kashechkin
Peter Velits
Rubén Plaza
Beñat Intxausti
However the yellow jersey Fedrigo has not made this split and no-one else who has got any time bonuses thus far including
Justo Tenorio
It is proving difficult to see what is happening behind there are a few splinter groups between the 33 and a big 91 rider pack. But up front hoping to seize the moment is
Matt Rowe
who launches a bold move.
It is Phinney on his wheel, the young American is in a great position to take the GC lead here any sort of time bonus should seal it. He and Rowe start to open a gap as Webeffect's lead out splutters, who is going to close this not Farrar that's for sure.
The sprinters though are coming quickly as we go into the last 750m with Ventoso, Avelino, Lavoine, Vanderbeist and Davis challenging. Farrar is trying to keep his nose in front of them.
As we rocket to the line its Ventoso who has timed his move the best, to take a stage once again this year. Vanderbeist could have done with being closer to the other sprinters edges out Lavoine for third, Davis 4th and Avelino is 5th. Wikipedia take 6th and 7th through Farrar and Phinney, perhaps unaware at this stage that Phinney will take the GC lead.
Phinney's rivals for the race have perhaps thinned dramitically today, only Velits, Kashechkin, Intxausti and Plaza are the realistic challengers you would think.
David Zabriskie
and
Alberto Contador
come in with
Aleksandr Efimkin
a minute and a half down in a group of six riders.
The main rump of the pack though come in as a forlorn group of 91 riders three minutes down, a lot of California dreams have died on the road to Modesto.
