Colombian dream - Team Colombia Coldeportes at Giro 2012
Database: | PCM.Daily's Public Beta 2012 DB | Race difficulty: | Hard | Race: | Giro d' Italia (stage race) | Fitness of all riders: | 89 |
The squad - "Nine Heroes"
Fabio Duarte
Role-Absolute leader
Fabio is our absolute leader, as the clearly best climber of the team. He will start defensively in the mountains, but could be more agressive later, if he would have nothing to loose.
Jarlison Pantano
Role - Guardian Angel
Jarlison Pantano has only one job in this Giro. To protect Fabio Duarte at all costs and with his best abilities. He is decent climber and should stay with Duarte in crucial parts of the race
Robinson Chalapud
Role - Guardian Angel, The Engine
Robinson is our best hilly rider, but he will focus mainly on protecting the interests of Fabio Duarte throughout the race and setting the tempo in the hilly terrain if it is needed.
Louis Felipe Laverde
Role - All around attacker
Laverde has the attacking spirit and our team should benefit from that. He will attack like a mad man, maybe even in the first week, as soon as he will spot some rise on the path.
Juan Pablo Suarez
Role - Complete helper
Juan is skilled in many cycling areas, for example he is the best TT in the team, thus will help us a lot in the murderous TTT in the first week. Then he should focus on the work of mountain domestique.
Esteban Chaves
Role - Flying youngster
Esteban is the greatest Colombian talent and he wants to begin his path for the future glory right here in Italy. He will have many chances to show his exceptional climbing abilities, he should try to join many mountain breaks.
John Darwin Atapuma
Role - Attacker of the slopes
Atapuma is great atacking climber, he feels like in heaven, when attacking on the most brutal slopes of the mountains. He will be probably our best shot on KOM jersey together with young Chaves.
Victor Hugo Pena
Role - Calm Experience
Victor is the most experienced rider of the team and pretty famous rider of the past decade. He was known for his good ability against the clock and thus will be mainly helper for TTT and a water-carrier later.
Juan Pablo Forero
Role - Wannabe sprinter
Juan Pablo is the fastest man of the team and should have fullfil the role of the sprinter. But compared to the continental sprinters, he is fast like a turtle, so he will end up helping on the flat probably.
The Route - "Highway to hell"
The 2012 Giro d'Italia route was officially unveiled in Milan , and as anticipated, the corsa rosa will be a decidedly more human affair after criticism that its traditional spectacle arguably veered toward excess last May.
The race will get underway in Herning,Denmark on May 5, and once again will conclude with an individual time trial in the centre of Milan three weeks later. While a healthy quota of set-piece mountain stages remain a staple of the Giro, the number of transfers has been cut dramatically, an early flight from the opening stages in Denmark back to Italy notwithstanding.
Stages 1-5
After two starts in the Netherlands in the past decade (Groningen in 2002 and Amsterdam in 2010), the Giro will break new ground by spending its opening three days in Denmark. A 8.7km prologue time trial in Herning on May 5 will decide the first maglia rosa, while only crosswinds can deny the sprinters two days of glory on the pan flat road stages before an early rest day as the caravan travels south to Italy. Poignantly, stage 3 to Horsens will be dedicated to the memory of the late Wouter Weylandt - he was killed in a crash on the Passo del Bocco stage 3 in 2011, after winning stage 3 to Middelburg the previous year. RIP Wouter
The Giro will enter home territory with a 32.2km team time trial around Verona on stage 4, this will be surely the killer for the weaker time-trial teams such as Colombia-Coldeportes.
Stage 5 is pan-flat again.
Stages 6-9
After a rolling day and first hills at the stage 6 , the Giro's first two summit finishes will come at Rocca di Cambio on stage 7 and Lago Laceno on stage 8 respectively. Though far from the toughest of climbs in Italy, there was high drama at Lago Laceno when the Giro last visited in 1998, as Alex Zülle caught and passed Marco Pantani en route to stage victory and the pink jersey.
Stage 9 should be another one for the sprinters.
Stages 10-13
Stages number 10,11 and 13 are pretty flat with some minor hills on the road, so this should be the sprinters job again, if their teams would have enough power to bring back the potential breakaway. However stage 10 ends with the short uphill finish to Assisi, the home of the founder of Franciscians order. Stage 11 has another speciality, it rolls over massive 243 kilometres.
Only harder one from this set of stages is stage 12 to Sestri Levante, with four categorized climbs. This stage looks perfect for the breakaway.
Stages 14-17
The next four stages are divided on a half by the second rest day. And you can bet that riders will need some rest after the real start of the Giro in stages 14 and 15. Stage 14 is flat from the start but finishes with two massive climbs Col de Joux and Cervinia. Stage 15 is on the other hand up and down all day and finishes with short, but very steep climb to Pian dei Resinelli. These two stages should give us complete image of who is here to challenge the top places in the end in Milan.
After the rest day and stage 16, which is rising a bit all day and finishes with an uphill sprint probably, we have a very tough stage ahead of us.
Stage 17 rolls over such climbs as Paso Valparola, Duran or Giau, from which riders downhill 18kms to the finish at Cortina.
Stages 18-21
The last four stages has it all, what a GT can offer and it will be very, very painful for the riders. The start is easy, 139 kilometres of slow descending to the finishing line, where sprinters will have the last chance to battle for the win (If there are any sprinters left before this stage. After this one, they will head home gladly).
Then the hell comes, prepare yourself for a ride. Stage 19 has 5 very tough clims on the route, giants as Passo Manghen for example and finishes with ultra-steep climb to ski-resort Val di Fiemme.
If you think nothing worse could not be thrown into play by the organisors, you are wrong. Stage 20 is the killer. It begins with Passo del Tonale, then rolls up and down for 100 kilometres all the way to the brutal Mortirolo. This would be enough for a tough mountain stage, but that is not the end!!
Because the stage ends with a monster Passo dello Stelvio, almost 40 kms of climbing to the height oif 2757metres, almost to the sky! Only the strongest riders on earth could challenge it and live.
If the race is not decided after 20 stages, we have the final TT in Milan to do the job. 31.5 kilometers is nothing short with all the climbs in the legs, so we can expect big time gaps and final re-shuffling of the riders positions.

I like the idea, and I love Jose Rujano, so Androni it is for me. His MO stat should be 83.

i really like the idea aswell - voted for astana because i would like to see a short story around them and especialy kreuziger i think he can improve this year ... looking forward to the 3 grand tours good luck in all of them
(ps: i think saxo bank would have been quite a good choice too because fuglsang will lead the team there and this could have been a nice challenge) |

Seems pretty tight now, i must admit i regret a bit that i include Colombia-Coldeportes, half of stages would be boring from us, but mountains would be fun on the other hand
And thanks vor voting of course

Hey, I had one with Café Colombia a couple of months ago!

And for the poll, I went for Androni. I like them, and they're different.

BTW. You have guy on your team called Esteban Chaves, who is probably the 2nd best, or even the best climber of the team.
Last year he won l'Avenir and he basically demolished David Boily on the climbs and took the overall win from him on the last stage.
I recommend editing his stats to probably 72 or 73 Mountain and 71 or 72 Hill. As well as upping STA and those things a bit.

Thanks, i hope you are right with Fabio
Anyway, here are some news from the Colombia-Coldeportes team:
Colombia-Coldeportes spotted training hard in Italy!
The prestigious italian newspapers Gazzeta dello Sport bring us picture of the team Colombia-Coldeportes on the slopes of Apprica climb. They are not there for a holiday ride, but for the final training for the closing Giro.
Reports say that there were 12 riders training and proving the coaches that they are the right ones to earn the spot. We can only speculate who will make the final squad, however the team should be built around young climber Fabio Duarte.
