You'd think the people behind the long standing Continental Tour's cobbled visit to Denmark would be frustrated by the clash with the cobbled tour down in Dunkirk. But maybe that was the plan after all, becuase with much of the cobbled stars away so the oppurtunity for Matti Breschel increases.
The Danish rider who sprints fast and rides well over the cobbles is here with a bit of back up with Anders Lund and Kevin Ista here.
But the big cobbled outfits of Bpost, Pokerstars and Koppert have not come here empty handed. Indeed whilst his manager may have forgetten him Frederik Nolf is here with a pretty good back up squad as we expect from the team in green. Bpost haven't their usual awesome strength in depth but Nikolas Maes is like Nolf a different class to most on the cobbled stuff. Koppert meanwhile have gambled that the cobbles will not make a huge difference veteren sprinter Oscar Freire leads a young developmental squad.
Speaking of development the Rapha Condor-Qhubeka squad features 6 African riders with Amadou Bakari perhaps giving us a glimpse into the future of cycling.
With a weaker field the chances also open up for Trilux, Unicredit and Jayco Red Bull. Trilux have a number of very decent engines in Sven Krauss, Steven Tronet and Aleksei Saramotins. They also have a lot of momentum going into this. Unicredit will likely be looking for William Bonnet to challenge in small group sprint. That seems to be the plan for Jérome Giaux of the Red Bull crew, however cobbles have been the teams achilles heel in an otherwise very consistent season.
Rothaus and Venchi have bought young squads up to Denmark, whilst Tinkoff rather strangely have sent just one rider. A small field could give these teams a hope of a breakaway triumph.

just noticed there is a clash between Herning & Dunkerque, that´s why I didn´t send Nolf to France... hopefully those cobble sections will be selective enough & cobblers will dominate here

Maes is one of the few big name cobblers here and I will be thoroughly disappointed if he doesn't try to attack. I am willing to bet that for some reason the AI will try to force it to a sprint though.

Should have brought Boom here seeing that lots of cobblers won`t participate.
Now I just hope for a breakaway or some top 30 small pointers by Velits... |

Pretty much as expected by my team. At least we showed some good riding in the break with 2 men. Sometimes I just think that sending a completely weak team should cause the "leader" to attack in the breakaway. Doesn`T happen in PCM I think,
In this case for example Velits (67) instead of a 50 and 52 cobbler. Then a breakaway would be more senseful imo.
Congrats to Jayco and Giaux. Someone I also wanted in the transfer season.
Bad luck for Breschel, who had to follow the other moves and wasn`t able to do a real sprint.
Might have been a perfect race for Vantomme actually. Hope he will do well now in Dunkerque instead.

Damn. Still, Maes did the right thing and I can't fault him for that. Congrats to our truly surprising winner.

arrgh, would have been lovely with a win there. Maybe should have send a stronger squad to help Breschel more.
Guess I have to be happy with a 2nd tought,
And great race & report. |
