MTN Loteria del Tachira - new start
redrobert
Hello, as promised i start my story anew ...

Team: Loteria del Tachira (Venezuela)
Difficulty: normal
Stat progression: 0.4
Economic difficulty: normal
Race preference: stage races, preferably in south america

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello?

Yes my name is Robert Straif, yes i was manager of a youth cycling team till a month ago. What? YOu must be kitting ... i shall take command in Venezuelas Cycling community? OF COURSE i am interested.

Well to be honest i am surprised the team owners of Venezuelas top cycling team Loteria del Tachira chose me to be their manager. But i am honored and will take over the responsibility.

The squad looks ok, nothing spectacular, but a few experienced veterans capable of winning a stage or small race.

Today we brought in two new riders. THey were just sitting around with no contract, so we took the oppurtunity. Both will easily be among our top guys.

i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/redrobert81/99998-1.jpg

The team is complete for now.

Team Captains

Marlon Perez Arango and Edwin Becerra could be twins ... so Becerra will lead the team in Venezuela and Arango in Columbia and Guatemala.

In hilly races Jose Alarcon might be captain too, maybe even co-captain in Vuelta Tachira.

Sprinters

Ivan Dominguez ist the clear #1. Jesus Perez will be main Sprinter in our home tour. Unfortunately we don't have any other good sprinters.

Today 5 of the 6 season goals were anounced ... it will be hard:

Team goals:

- stage win Vuelta al Tachira
- Top 10 Vuelta a Colombia
- Top 5- Vuelta a Guatemala

Sponsor goals

- Top 10 Circuit de Lorraine
- Top 10 Internationale Deutschland Tour
- Top 10 World Championship ITT

That will be very hard, but some are possible with luck and good planning.

After Cadel Evans won the australian championship we will race the most important race for our team

Vuelta al Tachira

The oweners of the team want us to race with the strongest squad possible ... those are the names we chose:

Team Captain
Edwin Becerra

Co-Captain/Last man standing
Jose Alarcon

Sprinter
Jesus Perez

Helpers
Diego Quintero
Pedro Herrera
Flavio de Luna
Santiago Oseda Sana
Daniel Medina

We believe our squad is strong enough for a stage win and maybe also a Top-10 finish. But we will see.

Stage 1 - Team Time trial San Cristobal

As we have not many time trialists it was not a surprise we lost some time here. We finished 12th. Not very good especially as we lost 1:02 to the winners Fly V Australia. Garmin only lost 9 seconds, so their captain Kessiakoff looks like a good shot.

Let's have a look on the big names in this years Vuelta Tachira:

13Fredrik Carl Wilhelm KessiakoffGarmin - Transitions
16Thomas DanielsonGarmin - Transitions
55Felix CardénasCafé de Colombia - Colombia es Pasión
73Giovanni ViscontiISD - Neri
81Riccardo RiccòMeridiana Kamen Team
107Daniele CallegarinTeam Type 1
131Takashi MiyazawaTeam Nippon

So given these riders it looks like we may even have the chance to reach the top 3

Stage 2: Tariba - Santa Barbara

A flat stage with one mountain at the start. We wanted the KOM Jersey, So Quintana was in the breakaway and first over the mountain. The mass sprint in the finish was something for the sprinter stars of the tour.

i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/redrobert81/99997-1.jpg

Jaan Kirisipuu of Kalev Chocolate Team won with a strong attack. Our sprinter Jesus Perez had a good sprint, finishing 5th.

Stage 3: Abejales - Guasdualito

This has been a totally flat stage, the breakaway had no real chance with a few sprinter teams working together. Zakkari Dempster (Sharp) is the first to start the mass sprint. But today the best sprinter in the field was just too strong. Julian Dean (Garmin) wins somfortably. What a victory! Jesus Perez again with a good sprint finishing 6th. Julian Dean is also taking the lead in the GC and Sprinter Jersey.

The stage to Cordero is the first hilly stage, here the real contenders will have to show themselves.

In the beginning Quintero started several attacks to get away from the peloton. But as it turned out he was seen too big a danger as he was never allowed more than 1 minute. Still he won the KOM points along the way. The final climb was an elimination race, as Jose Alarcon made the pace for almost the whole climb. Edwin Becerra sat in the leading group of 15 riders. But he was never able to go past Alarcon. The leading position is still not decided in my Team. The two finished 9th respectivly 10th. In the GC we are not yet in the Top 10.

Felix Cardenas showed to be the strongest climber today winning the stage barely as he lost a lot of his advandage on the last metres. Some favourites lost a lot of time today though. Kessiakoff lost 2:44 Monsalve 3:00.

Looks like an interesting stage ... at least for the sprinters. The mountain at the start will not do any harm.

i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/redrobert81/99991.jpg

Quintero with an attack to win the KOM jersey back ... he was the first on the mountain, though the peloton did not let him away.

Finally there was a mass sprint as expected, and today Jesus Perez proved strongest. Maybe the other sprinters were a bit tired after yestreday. We allready have the sponsor goal of a stage win.

An intersting stage with this very very long but not steep climb at the end. From the beginning of the Climb till 15 km before the finish line Quintana made the pace and reeled the breakaway in. From there Alarcon took over. Alarcon and Becerra looked like top 3 finishing, but in the sprint they were just not competitive. Still 4th and 6th is a great finish for our team.

Felix Cardenas once again proved strongest, while the good time trialist Danielson again didn't lose contact.

Nice team, nice idea and pretty good start to the season with two riders in top 10, the podium is far though. Good luck for the next stages Smile

This stage was a disaster for us GC wise. Quintero who was in the breakaway was the only one who didn't lose too much time. Surprisingly he finished 4th. After this stage he is just 30 seconds behind Alarcon and Becerra in the General Classement. The stage was once again won by Cardenas who took over the leaders jersey from Danielson.

Today the time trial took place, and it was a great stage. Dominique Cornu was the first to show a fast time ... 27:01 should be the best for quite some time. Nathan O'Neill surprisingly finally went past him... 26:50 looked unbeatable for a long time. Becerra and Alarcon once again were within a second of each other .. 26:52 was enough for 3rd respectivly 4th place of the stage. That's a great result for us.

Tanel Kangert set the new leading time with 26:47. Now the top 3 are coming. First maybe the worst TT in Ricardo Ricco ... he ended 45th losing 52 seconds. I think that was too much to have a chance for the Tour victory. A Podium is still very much possible though.Next came Tom Danielson. As expected he put forth a great pace finishing 6th just 6 seconds behind the winner. Last man on the road has been Felix Cardena, today he was not strong enough to win the stage, but he made a very good TT for his quality finishing 12thjust 17 seconds behind Kangert who won the stage.

This can be a dangerous stage with lots of mountains in the end. We desciede that Herrera should be in the breakaway today. And it was a good decision. Cafe de Colombia didn't want to put a lot of effort today. Their maximum advantag was 12:30.

On the last mountain several riders of the breakaway attacked and Martin Mares of Team PSK Whirlpool proved strongest. Herreras attack 5 km from the finish secured his 2nd place which is simply great and putting him in GC on 11th place. With this stage we also took over the lead in the Team classement.

i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/redrobert81/99988.jpg

Edwin Becerra was able to put 30 seconds between himself and the rest of the favourites and so winning at least a little time.
