The opening stage in the Ronde van Belgie contains four cobbled sections by pre race speculation seems to suggest that this stage will suit your regular sprinters.
Saïd Haddou
seems to be the best sprinter in the CDiv2 and is a strong favourite today.
Though it may not be a clear cut sprinters stage with a very healthy 14 man breakaway dominating the early proceedings.
The names:
Joris Wagemans
Jonathan Hivert
Vitauskas Kaupas
Radomir Simunek
Sergey Sarkisov
Ed Clancy
Magnus Bäckstedt
Nuno Ribeiro
Maurizio Morandi
Jaoa Costa
Borislav Puric
Sander Maasing
Thomas Berkhout
Adam Norris
Two of which Berkhout and Simunek are very good on the cobbled stuff, we also have some good sprinters and young Belgian Wagemans is keen to show himself early taking the first of three hotspot sprints ahead of Sarkisov and Norris.
14 men clear is quite a number and with no clear favourite for this race there seems to be some doubt over who will chase a couple of teams are eager then to have a rider join this break having missed it earlier.
First decent cobbler
Hervé Duclos-Lassalle
goes.
Then Belgians
Bart Veyt
and
Sander Cordeel
Duclos - Lassalle bridges to the break before the second sprint and at this point with 60km to go the break have 1.40 on the two chasers and 4.30 on the pack. Vodafone's Adam Norris siezes the second sprint ahead of Sarkisov and Berkhout.
We still have some issues in the pack as no-one really wants to assume control, Veyt and Cordeel are finding the chase difficult as well as the winds are quite high. With 30km to go the gap is still nearly four minutes between the break and the pack. The pack start to speed up though with Samsung-Mol deciding they better put an end to this, they catch the chasers quickly.
Meanwhile the break take in the third sprint with Berkhout taking it from Duclos-Lasselle and Wagemans. This means we have a four way tie as leaders in the road with Berkhout, Norris, Sarkisov and Wagemans all getting eight seconds bonuses.
The pack have motored and reduced the gap to just over a minute with 8km to go, but Samsung Mol run out of men and the break are going to get their day.
Armavia seem to like leading things out and Sarkisov assumes the position at the head of affairs as they enter the sprint stages.
They wind up for the last dash to the line, the winner likely to be the first leader in the Ronde van Belgie. Adam Norris is dragging Kaupas of Ekspla forward with Simunek and Wagemans looking for a clear run.
The Finnair rider blocks the progress of Ed Clancy and it is Simunek and Wagemans who are looking to put pressure on Norris who seems to be fading slightly in the final.
Cheered on by his home fans Wagemans finds another gear. Similarly on the other side of the road Berkhout finally gets a clear run and is storming through.
But not fast enough to stop a thrilling victory for Delhaize and Wagemans, how they have turned the tables here!
Berkhout takes second, Simunek third, Norris 4th and Hivert is 5th. Behind Said Haddou wins the sprint for 16th about a minute back.
