I don't know how many people here watch skiing, but I can't be the only one so here goes nothing.
As some of you know, Tour de Ski consists of 9 races over 11 days with a mix between long distance and sprints. It all culminates with the 9th, and last, stage; up the giant hill in Val di Femme. For those interested, or those who are curious, can discuss the races here.

A quick recap of some of the favourites:
Women:
Justyna Kowalczyk (POL):
The winner of the last two editions of Tour de Ski (2009/2010, 2010/2011) hs been struggling so far in the beginning of this season. However, in just a few short weeks she has shown a singificant increase in form and won the first 3 stages, coming 2nd on the 4th.
Marit Bjørgen (NOR):
Having one 2nd place overall in the Tour de Ski as her best result (2006/2007) Bjørgen has never focused on the Tour but rather on the World Championships. Marit Bjørgen has been absolutely dominating in the early goings this season, winning every race, but two before the start of the race.
Aino-Kaisa Saarinen (FIN):
Having never won the TdS, her best result is a 2nd place in 2008/09. Might not be strong enough to challenge for the win, she is expected to fight for 3rd behind Kowalczyk and Bjørgen.
Therese Johaug (NOR):
Young and promising outsider, she is expected to be in the top 3, maybe challenging Kowalczyk or Bjørgen for the 2nd place. Johaug came 2nd overall last year, being one of the fastest up the alpine hill in Val di Femme. Her biggest win todate is her gold medal on the 30km in the World Championships in 2011, aswell as a gold in the relay from the same championship.
Men:
Dario Cologna (SWI):
Perhaps the biggest favorite this season. He has two overall wins (2008/2009, 2010/2011) and is a good allrounder.
Petter Northug (NOR):
Petter Northug has finished 2nd for the last 3 years and has made the Tour his major goal this season. It will mostly be a very close race between him and Cologna. Good allrounder with 3 gold medals from last years World Championships.
Lukáš Bauer (CZE):
Having won the Tour de Ski twice (2007/08, 2009/10) Bauer is a force to be reckoned with. He is one of the best when it comes to distances, however his inability to sprint will cause him problems. As the two other favorites, Northug and Cologna, usually get to the final in the sprints, Bauer usually failes to even qualify, missing out on several bonus seconds.

Despite popular opinion I will continue with updating the results from the remaining stages
The women today had a fairly hilly 3km individual start. The race was won by Marit Bjørgen who beat Kowalczyk. 3rd place went to Astrid Uhrenholt Jacobsen (NOR). This means Bjørgen was able to gain roughly 7 seconds to Kowalczyk whilst Johaug lost some more time.
The mens race consisted of a 5km individual start, in which Alexander Legkov (RUS) won just ahead of Eldar Rønning (NOR), Dario Cologna (SWI) finishing 3rd. Petter Northug (NOR) lost his overall lead to Cologna after finishing 12th, 13.8 seconds behind Legkov. Since Cologna picked up 5 bonus seconds he now leads the Tour de Ski 15.7 seconds ahead of Northug.
Standings after 5 out of 9 stages:
Women
1. KOWALCZYK Justyna (POL) 1:11:02.9
2. BJOERGEN Marit NOR 1:11:20.6
3. JOHAUG Therese NOR 1:12:36.8
4. LAHTEENMAKI Krista FIN 1:14:46.4
5. SAARINEN Aino- Kaisa FIN 1:14:47.0
6. KALLA Charlotte SWE 1:14:53.7
7. RANDALL Kikkan USA 1:14:54.1
8 BOEHLER Stefanie GER 1:15:24.9
9 STEIRA Kristin Stoermer NOR 1:15:27.2
10 ZELLER Katrin GER 1:15:31.8
Men
1 COLOGNA Dario SUI 1:51:11.9
2 NORTHUG Petter jr. NOR 1:51:27.6
3 LEGKOV Alexander RUS 1:51:51.1
4 VYLEGZHANIN Maxim RUS 1:52:26.8
5 KERSHAW Devon CAN 1:52:41.7
6 BAUER Lukas CZE 1:52:47.8
7 MANIFICAT Maurice FRA 1:52:47.8
8 JAPAROV Dmitriy RUS 1:53:04.2
9 ROENNING Eldar NOR 1:53:06.4
10 HELLNER Marcus SWE 1:53:11.4
Tomorrows stage:
The 6th stage will be a 1.3km sprint, free technique. Favorites amongst the women here are Bjørgen, Kowalczyk and Kikkan Randal.
For the men the final will most likely consist of Northug, Cologna allthough the russians will probably be represented with several strong skiers after what they showed on the last sprint.

Kowalczyk struggled today with the knee injury, friend from Poland said to me she might not finish the tour as it''s getting worse daily. Here's English article I found :

I really like all olympic winter sports, cross country skiing included. Lukas Bauer is in really good form so hopefully he will have really strong end of the race, 3rd place behind Cologna and Northug shold be possible to achieve, at least I hope.

I usually look at skiing a lot but haven´t had any time to follow this before a little on todays stages.
I have just read about the other stages, not a success for Sweden yet.
How about Richardsson DQ ,in Sweden they say that it was a tough penalty. What do you think? |

Well, the usuall penalty is that the skier is listed as last +1 second. Since the last man to cross the finishline was more then 7 minutes behind, Richardsson got his time +1 second. It is very harsh and extremely unlucky for him. Had it been a shorter race such as todays, he would have gotten away with just around 2 minutes.
Bauer will probably not qualify for the sprint tomorrow, if he does he will not make it to the semis. Should Cologna and/or Northug get to the final, which they'll mostly do, Bauer might lose as much as a minute to one of them.
I'm not sure what to think of Kowalczyks injury. Her staff says that she might have to leave the Tour, Kowalczyk herself seems to disagree. She definitaly didn't seem to have a problem today!

In todays 1.3km sprint free technique we did not see any major surprises. The womens final was won by Marit Bjørgen, Kikkan Randal finishing 2nd whilst the 3rd place went to Justyna Kowalczyk. Therese Johaug lost even more time to Kowalczyk nd Bjørgen when she finished last in her quarter final.
In the mens final both Cologna and Northug put up a strong effort, Northug finishing 2nd and Cologna 3rd, behind

Cologna is looking very strong indeed and I think Northug will have to come up with something special. Even though Cologna might be in a bit better shape Northug has a different kind of additude that will help him a long way.
Legkov is probably the biggest threat to the two in front and if Petter and Dario starts looking at eachother to much it won't take long before he catches up to them. Manificat has not been doing well at all so far and I doubt he will reach a sudden peak form wise. It's the same with Kalla; she needs to do something truly spectacular to get anywhere near the podium and personally I doubt it. |

Anyone saw todays stage?
I'm swedish and because of that I still think about Richardssons DQ , did you see Nortug going outside tha course before the sprint today?
I dont want them to do the same as Richardsson to Northug because that was too hard but they need to be consistent.
As I heard Richardsson did it in the middle of the race and Northug right before the finnish to take some places.
Anyway really happy about Hellners stage today!

Todays stages were very exiting and for the men the Tour might be decided. On the mens 32km Dario Cologna showed his strenght and got a solo win by 1:15 down to a group consisting of Northug, Hellner, Legkov, Kershaw and Manificat. Northug started just rougly 13 seconds behind Cologna and quickly caught up to him. However, he soon was forced to let Cologna go and drop back to join Legkov. Dario maintained the lead whilst Northug and Legkov was caought by a chasing group.
There was some controvercy during the finish as Petter Northug skied with his left foot outside the course in order to gain a few places. The jury decided to give him a yellow card, this caused some protests since Swedens Richardsson got a 7 minute penalty for almost the same action.
The womens 15km didn't decide who would win the Tour, but it did make it clear who will finish first and second. Kowalczyk and Bjørgen worked together the whole time and was able to increase their gap on Therese Johaug who had a somewhat bad day. Bjørgen won the sprint against Kowalczyk, beating her to the finish line by 1.2 seconds, she also picks up 15 bonus seconds. Kowalczyk gets 10 and Johaug 5.
Standings after 7/9:
Men:
1 COLOGNA Dario SUI 3:02:25.6
2 NORTHUG Petter jr. NOR 3:03:46.4
3 LEGKOV Alexander RUS 3:03:52.0

8 BAUER Lukas CZE 3:05:32.4
9 HARVEY Alex CAN 3:05:33.4
10 VYLEGZHANIN Maxim RUS 3:05:36.9
Women:

Cologna was very strong today while Northug showed the true side of himself. Northug is a very good skier, no doubt, but he is simply to impulsive and stupid a fact that pays off a day like this one. Cologna, on the other hand, is very practiced.
Hellner did a good ride today, however, he is to impulsive just like Northug...

Please explain, in what way do you find Northug and Helner too "impulsive" and "stupid"? |

Well, this is a thread about Tour de Ski who could be compared to Tour de France since it's a stage race. The FIS World Cup, on the other hand, could be compared to classics.
Cologna is like Cadel Evans. A smart rider who is skilled tactical and manages all types of terrains.
Northug and Hellner is more like Gilbert. They are good in one-day races and shorter stage races but when it comes to race like Tour de Ski they waste to much energy on impulsive acts like sprinting for stage wins and that pays off in the end.
Still, I am not the right person to give this riders criticism, this is only my thoughts. Looking forward to the final stages, it will be an interesting fight behind Cologna.

When you explain it like that I understand you better. The thing with Petter Northug is that he wants to win every race. This attitude works quite well since he usually does, it's also the reason why he is so successful during the World Championship and other similar competitions. Sadly, this attitude towards competing will somewhat hinder you in a tour like this one. |

The winner of the mens 20km classic was Eldar Roenning (NOR), who took his 3rd TdS stage win in his career. The stage didn't change much between the 1st and 2nd, yet it did prove vital for two favorites; Legkov who held the 3rd place before the stage and Maurice Manificat. Both had a bad day finishing 1:59.9 and 2.25.0 behind the winner respectively.
Due to bonus seconds Petter Northug lost 1 second to Cologna, yet gained an advantage over Helner and Kershaw. He will start the final stage roughly 40 seconds ahead of them.
The womens race didn't offer any major surprised such as the mens race did. Bjørgen and Kowalczyk quickly showed that they were in a different league than the others, creating a noticeable gap early on. Kowalczyk won the stage 7 seconds ahead of Bjørgen after distancing her on the last hill before the finish. Therese Johaug had another bad day coming in at 11th place roughly 51 seconds behind. The 3rd place went to Charlotte Kalla who had a good day.

This was the final day of the 2011/12 Tour de Ski. The skiers had to climb the dreaded hill in Val di Femme and the two favorites both came out as winners; Justyna Kowalczyk on the womens side and Dario Cololgna was the mens winner.
Both have now won the Tour three times, Kowalczyks wins have all come in succession. Kowalczyk and Bjørgen were side by side untill the final parts of the climb when Kowalczyk broke away. Bjørgen couldn't follow and had to settle for 2nd.
Petter Northug tried to close the gap to Cologna, but it was impossible. He burned of too much energy in a last ditch attempt, this meant that Marcus Helner was able to overtake him for 2nd place overall. A great achievement for the swede who had been struggling for the first 7 stages.
Just as she did last year, Therese Johaug was the fastest up the hill among the women, on the mens side Alexander Legkov had the best time.
The final standings after 9/9:
