I always have one rider protecting my leader up the final climb, but no matter what the pace is the helper always tires very quickly. Usually I'll be sitting with 3 riders at the start of the climb; my leader and two helpers. When the first helper is tired I switch over to the second one. The problem is that when the 2nd helper is just riding along he has no troubles, but when I tell him to protec my leader, he is completely empty in a matter of seconds.
I could understand this if I was really gunning it with my leader, but I'm not. There is no difference in pace, yet he is exhausted right away when proteting someone. If I tell him to stop protecting my leader, he keeps up with the group without any problems, he even regains his stamina!
Is there anything I can do to avoid this happening. I seems very odd to me.

Yes...don´t protect.
No,serious...this happens to me all the time....just like you say.
All those times that this happens,i notest that if i put helper with 80% and protect,he will ride more to the front and this makes him get tired faster....if i put him on 70% and protect,he will stay more behind and my leader will loose terrain in peloton, making him loosing energy when he´s up to ´the front again.....so,fazit:
Annoying...
It can depend on the MO stat of the protecting rider ...
I have used Frank Schleck to protect Andy on Alpe d'Huez. I put Andy on Dot 80% and Frank will be able to protect for 7-8km, the still ride to the finish at a good pace, because his MO is good, and close to that of Andy.
If your rider has an MO of more than 4more than the protector, the protector has to kill themselves ...

If its like this, why do i see many times helpers from other teams, weakers then their captain, riding uphill much more kms then mine?even when my helper is +4 and 76MO....
i'm just saying what happens with me, and offering a reason as to why....
It does take more energy to protect, so that rider running out of energy sooner is not a surprise, but tbh i dont see that much difference in energy usage on a final climb, perhaps over earlier ones...

Well one thing to take to account that playing on Extreme I think gives +2 to all stats of computer controlled riders ( everybody except you ). Second of all the game is tougher on you as well. Extreme isn't quite well designed imo. If you try the game on normal you helper should last as long as AI riders that protect their leader.
I play on normal and can say that my helper does not last as long as the other helpers. Not by a mile. Even though protecting someone is a bit harder than simply riding for yourself, I don't see why he should be able to keep up without a problem, yet he can't protect for 1km.
Read my earlier posts, they both have the same form, aswell as day form. I have them on the same training schedule so both have 93 and 94. Their day form has never been further of by more than 2 points.
