The first of two HC cobbled classics and with a tough combination of short steep hills and cobblestone sections it should be a real test of the toughmen.
Unlike in the Protour, the Ctour cobbled classics thus far have been unpredictable with the newly formed Belgian outfit Team Bpost yet to score that big cobbled win that seemed so certain with the riders they have at their disposable.
Pieter Vanspeybrouck has tried hard to get things moving for them and showed at the protour race Gent Wegelum that he still has the brilliant form of last year in there somewhere. We have yet to see any sort of decent tactic from he or his strong teammates Nikolas Maes and Niels Albert
It was 2009 E3 Prijs winner Tom Veelers who has landed one of the two cobbled races so far this year. His Koppert team will be looking to build on that momentum here before their home HC cobbled race next month.
Pokerstars came into the season feeling underprepared but even so they would have felt that the cobbled season would have given far more rewards than what have been dished out so far. Their strongest cobbler Frederik Nolf has done nothing of note and neither has young German Roger Kluge. Have they been waiting for the biggest CTour stage to strike?
Speaking of waiting to strike, we are still waiting for that big classic win that will define Adam Blythe of Rapha Condor-Qhubeka who seems to be struggling without reasonable cobbled support who only has the unproven Amadou Bakari to help him.
Elsewhere we have to mention Nokere Koerse winner Damien Gaudin whose young focused squad are picking up some nice little wins.
New teams Trilux and Rothaus seem to be enjoying themselves on the cobbled stuff. The likes of Arnaud Coyot and Lars Boom have chances. Venchi may find things a bit difficult, though Oz Cyclings veteren sprinter Baden Cooke and Cyclevox's German powerhouse
Christian Knees may survive the several selections that are likely to occur.
Bottom of the pile come Proximus - Trek who have surprisingly left 2008 champion David Kopp at home in Germany for this one.

Looking forward to this one.
Hopefully Boom can do a top 10 here or surprise with a long distance attack. |

The cobbled races went good so far, another Top10 for Coyot here and i´d be lucky.

This one should be one for Vanspeybrouck. He should be able to take advantage of the hills in the last third of the race, and I think he will arrive the finish solo.
But another interesting cobbled classic, that's for sure. Definitely looking forward to reading the report! |

Should be the most interesting CT-Cobbled Classic so far.. I do have some small hope for Baden Cooke to survive this cobbles in leading group, but I think this hills will be to tough for him.. A mid-stage attack is always dangerous on such a route, but - tbh - I hope for a battle between the very best here

I really need this one. This is the toughest cobbled course by far and I don't think Drenthe suits my team so it is this one or none of them. Come on Vanspeybrouk.

Top 20 would be an achievement here. Somewhat confused at my own team selection, if I'm honest...

Surely Blythe is due some luck eventually. Either crashing, puncturing or cursed by stupid AI tactics...

I really hoped for a top 10 here as Boom was by far the best puncheur of all cobbled riders. But this is just awesome winning a HC race.
Also Velits on 15 and Novak in top 30 beating Nolf is not bad at all.
Obviously Rothaus is coming from behind with two unexpected podiums in cobbled races. |

Way to completely throw away what should have been an easy victory in the finale, guys. Why do I even bother?
At the end of the cobbled classics my team has 1 win. That wasn't even a cobbled race. Sigh.

Congrats to roturn and Rothaus for a great win! I'm too disappointed by Cooke right now to give you a deserved smiley for that... well, okay

Amazing win for Boom! Great race, with Bpost once again messing up the final sprint. Feel kind of sorry for them, with such a team for the cobbles.
Very nice report Smowz. |
