Yesterday we saw a demonstration of the highly rated 26 year old Belgian
Jan Bakelants
ability as he romped away from his hilly rivals to take the opening stage. Today's parcours have rather cheekily been labelled flat, the impression is that things may not be as decisive as yesterday but still favours the hilly sprinters like
Filippo Pozzato
and
Francisco Ventoso
though names like
Kobe Vanoverschelde
and
Maximiliano Richeze
are mentioned also.
There are six categorised climbs so this will still be your usual demanding Basque day last climb albeit small is crested with just 8km to go, this could be unpredictable.
The first half of the stage will be focused on the nightmarishly steep Orduna climb which offers big King of the Mountains points. After a disappointing stage yesterday for his British team journeyman
Bradley Wiggins
goes away with young commentators nightmare
Alexandr Nepomnyachsniy
Wiggins takes the first KoM (6-4-2) climb ahead of the 25 year old Kazach with
Johnny Hoogerland
sprinting out of the pack for third.
Hoogerland though moves back into the pack as three riders who attacked with him press on to catch Wiggins and Nepo.
Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff),
Mauro Facci
and
Jure Kocjan
get up there but none of them interfere in Wiggins' KoM points gathering, which is surprising for Kocjan being as his team mate
Francisco José Terciado
leads the competition with just 22 points. Wiggins by winning the second KoM (6-4-2) prime puts himself closer to the lead. Nepomnyachsniy was second here ahead of Brutt.
Two more riders bridge to our break of the day before the long ascent of the Orduna, they are
Ethan Weiss
and
Imanol Erviti
It is tough on the riders as they take on this climb with sections above 15%, the rain really is lashing down on them.
Brad Wiggins stays calm and is unchallenged near the top as he takes the full 16 points for leading over the Orduna and moves into the KoM lead. Time to take a well earned swig of the special sauce!
Weiss is second here ahead of Brutt, Facci, Kocjan, Nepomnyachsniy and Erviti.
With 100km to go the breaks lead is over eight minutes but B and O either chasing for
Kobe Vanoverschelde
or
Edvald Boasson Hagen
start to reel it in.
Following the first sprint won by Britt over Kocjan and Weiss some of the break begin to struggle on the 4th King of the Mountains climb which is a 10-8-6-4-2 allocation. Nepomnyachsniy amnd Erviti are dropped, meanwhile Wiggins starts to slump his shoulders near the top and doesn't sprint for more points.
Faccit takes it to move to 18 King of the Mountains points ahead of Brutt (20), Weiss (18), Kocjan (10) and Wiggins who moves to 30 KoM points.
Wiggins looks safe enough for the day but on the small fifth King of the Mountains climb Weiss battles past Brutt to move to 24 total points with the Russian.
Facci is third to move to twenty KoM points, as the break move down hill to move into the last 50km of this draining day. Their lead is down to 5.30 and with just five riders left it is looking touch and go. Brutt and Weiss continue to trade blows as both take a sprint prime with the other in second and the two primes leading up to the last climb. Kocjan was third at the first but by the second has faded off the break, with Facci nabbing third at the last sprint prime.
The break do still have three minutes with 25km to go but have found the undulating terrain relentless and before we even get to the last climb the pack have them in their reach.
Domenik Klemme
reels them in.
Bottom of the climb and kapow
Jan Bakelants
full of confidence attacks immediately.
The Belgian may feel he can catch the other leaders out here who are slow to react only really
Simone Ponzi
tries to respond and Trofimov is third over the top of the climb.
However on the descent Sony chase it all back, but as they catch Bakelants and Ponzi another Wiggle rider attacks hard.
It's 24 year old Brit
Tom Diggle
There is some hesitation from the bunch but with his team having done so much work
Edvald Boasson Hagen
feels compelled to chase, trouble is Bakelants is on his wheel with sprinters
Maximiliano Richeze
and
Steven Caethoven
.
Two other riders though have some extra juice in their legs to attack as
Stefan Schumacher
and
Danilo Di Luca
turn back time and punch out.
Under the kite the notorious duo overtake young Diggle, with Schumacher looking fast Di Luca is straining to hold the German.
Another veteran in 2011 Rund um Koln winner
Leonardo Duque
tries a late catch.
But as you can see by the overhead the distance to the leader is too great, Di Luca tries one last stab at glory as he tries to round Schumacher but alas he cannot. Schumacher takes one of the biggest wins of his career!
The German moves right into the GC reckoning with this win and subsequent bonuses, but Bakelants overtaken by Trofimov in the sprint for 4th holds the jersey today. Diggle takes a decent third place with Duque 4th. Hagen, Ponzi, Richeze and Caethoven round out the top ten the likes of Ventuso and Pozzato are nowhere. The latter rider was dropped in the final stages, Festina seem to be paying for their decision to sell Sammy Sanchez! They even lose one of their number from the race as
Damion Drapac
finishes outside the time limit with
Alexander Giraldo
and
Aggrey Sebright
