what's needed for shadows

It may be a stupid question, but I can't play with shadows and would like to know how to change it as cheap as possible.
My System:
Amd x2 64 4600+
4 GB Ram
Geforce 8600GT 512 MB |

Why can't you play with shadows?
If you cannot activate them, then use the "force settings" option (One of the options on the right side in the graphic option menu.) |

Then you need to lower your graphics-settings - in general  Seems like your System can't handle your graphics.

No, I just need to turn off the shadows, and I can play with 1280x1024 and not with the lowest details. That's why I hoped to change just a little (the geforce?) to get the shadows working. |

I really do not understand why tsmoha had to tell you to lower your settings when you ask how you can raise them, but anyway...
The graphic card does display the shadows, therefore you would need to get a stronger card. But looking at the recommended system requirements (Which could also be found on the back of your game) I saw that your card should be enough to play the game.

All drivers are up to date (I think), AMD Dual Core Optimizer is installed, all background progs are turned off, but I still can't play with shadows.
Even without ANY details at 800x600 I get a no go!
Just to compare, here are my normal settings without shadows and without problems (I'm german ):
1024x768
Antialiasing 2
Veg 2
Audience 4
Landscape detail 2
Detail city 2
Anisotropie 2
Texture 2
Buildings 2
Waterreflections
Road

The "one texture per cyclist" needs much performance. I think the same is valid for water reflections. Turn these two off and also turn off the recording of the replay if you don't need it, then try again.
But if you want to play with all the settings you need a better card. Just be warned that the game does crash if it hits the 1.8 GB limit, no matter how good your computer is. Sorry when I'm not clear enough, but I CAN play with these settings (no shadows) without problems. What I can't do is playing without ANY details and a resolution of 800x600 with activated shadows. That's why it seems so strange to me.
But given that I can't activate the shadows with my hardware, would it make sense to change only the grafic card? |

So you turned off "one texture per rider" and the water reflexions and still cannot play with the shadows?
But anyway, the graphic comes from the graphic card, so my best guess is to replace the card. But maybe you should search this and other forums to see if you can find other players who have the same card. They could tell you if they can play with shadows or not.
