The Cameron Highlands stage involves a brute of a climb clocking out at 38 kilometres, though after it is ascended we have a hilly 32 klicks at altitude.
It should be selective but maybe not decisively so with tomorrows Genting Highlands classic maybe the one to give the decisive answer. Then again with the leaders seemingly evenly matched any sort of gain here could be the big moment.
Marco Marzano
siezed control of the race yesterday following the right moment to zip past
Gianpaolo Caruso
and
John Gadret
who both seem to have the strongest teams in the race.
Bookies list
Daniel Moreno
Carlos Castaño
and
Wilmer Vasquez
as some of the favourites today.
But first as ever early break attempts, no-one really manages to get away before the first sprint but
John Degenkolb
is surprised as any to take the first sprint ahead of
Andreas Matzbacher
and
Johan Coenen
These three form part of a large break that also included
Niki Terpstra
Kin-San Wu
Ole Hirschlein
Johan Le Bon
Jarlinson Pantano Gómez
Yoshimitsu Hiratsuka
Aaron Gate
Michael Vink
Bernardo Colex
Jaco Venter
Nairo Quintana
The notable names for King of the Mountains here are Hirschlein (10 KoM pts), Quintana (10KoM pts), Matzbacher (8 KoM pts), Vink (6 KoM pts) and Coenan (4 KoM pts) all admittedly someway behind Moinards 22 pts in the lead.
None seem that bothered about the sprint competition with Coenan rolling through the first ahead of Colex and Gate.
Then later on it was Quintana ahead of Vink and Terpstra as we prepare for the big long climb.
The first king of the mountains prime is really before the climbing starts it is keenly contested and Bianchis' Matzbacher takes the climb ahead of Quintana and Vink.
It moves Matzbacher and Quintana up to 14 points and in contention for that polka dot jersey and they begin the climb with a comfortable 5.30 lead which gives them a shot at the 16 points up for grabs for the winner of the Cameron climb.
Behind Ferrari control the pace in the pack steadily ramping up the pace on this incredibly long ascent. They reduce the pack down to 37 riders.
But they do not catch the break, where the KoM men slightly misjudge their sprint alllowing Pantano Gomez to go over ahead of Quintana and Matzbacher.
The inflated points at this climb however allow Quintana to take the King of the Mountains lead on 26 points ahead of Matzbacher on 24 points and Moinard now on 22.
In the pack we do not get a lot of action until near the top where
Christophe Kern
and
Jairo Agudelo
try to get away.
They cannot get very far but with the break slowly being reeled in
Marco Marzano
is the first GC man to test the legs of the domestiques fully as they approach the last KoM prime.
John Gadret
goes with.
Gianpaolo Caruso
and
Sylwester Szmyd
respond moving up to join the other two as they catch the break.
But Pirelli pull it back together soon yeilding to Ferrari who take control once again the break is caught.
Ferrari up the ante as first we see the Oz Cycling youngsters dropped.
Caruso takes the King of the Mountains, but significantly for today Matzbacher takes a couple of points drawing him level with Quintana.
Caruso is all over this one determined to make this stage count after Ferrari have worked so hard all stage long. They have caused some damage the Ferraris but coming up the end of todays stage we still have 18 riders fighting it out
Gianpaolo Caruso
Gadret, Wu and Moreno
Colex and Stetina
Matzbacher and Schwab
Pantano Gomez and Szmyd
Carlos Castaño
Agudelo, Vasquez and Le Bon
Marco Marzano
Nairo Quintana
Yoshimitsu Hiratsuka
and
Jaco Venter
As we come into the last 2 kilometers Caruso drops back looking warily at the well placed Red Bull riders with Schwab happy to take the lead.
Caruso looks to negate the Red Bull numbers taking off fast with 900m to go, race leader Marzano trying a later move to keep hold of his jersey.
Clearly Caruso is on amazing form today as Moreno and Gadret cannot really close and Marzano is unable to repeat his heroics of the day before.
Caruso takes the win and deservedly you would say Ferrari now control the race, Osella and Maisto worked very hard today.
Still all to play for on the Genting Highlands you would have to say.
