Tour de Boland - Stage 1
SportingNonsense
This race will be remembered for its hilly stages, but it does start with an opportunity for the sprinters. Not too many have turned up for it, but someone has to win it! Favourites include JJ Haedo - with support from Tayler Tolleson, Oscar Gatto, Jiri Hochmann. Matteo Priamo seems to be Jayco RB's best option - a stage and quality of field that would really have suited Impey had he been selected - while could we perhaps see Jonathan Bellis involved? He is the best sprinter of the overall contenders.

We also have a climb on feature, thus a chance to earn a few ranking points by taking the KoM jersey. With no real team leader here, Trilux show their willingness to be aggressive instead, and Zepunkte makes sure he is the first of the 4 man break to top the climb

The breakaway were

But too many teams were willing to chase, so they had no chance of surviving. Rohan Dennis lasting the longest to claim the most aggressive rider prize.

So to the sprint. Rapha Condor have taken command with Jiriakov, Sulzberger and Bellis. Not a pure sprinters train, but certainly a powerful one. Haedo knows this, and is on Bellis' wheel - Tolleson nowhere in sight. Priamo is loitering around aswell, while Vespa have Speirs leading Gatto.

Ronny Scholz tries to continue Trilux' aggression but fails to outpace Jiriakov

With 3km to go Jiriakov has pulled off, Sulzberger taking over, while Priamo has now taken up Haedo's wheel

The sprint begins with Speirs looking to take on Sulzberger

The Australian powers away though, as Bellis waits to pounce
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/bolands1-8.jpg

Bellis leads into the final corner with a kilometre to go with Haedo perfectly placed. Priamo also there, as Gatto now looks to be trying to take Priamo's wheel

The expected scenario now would be Haedo comfortably passing Bellis to win .. well thats not going to happen. Bellis forces a gap as Haedo sprints backwards, theres no acceleration on the Argentinian's legs today

Haedo was simply an obstacle for Priamo then, as the Italian tries to close the gap

But the stage goes to Jonathan Bellis! Perfectly led out by the team, Sulzberger has every right to be celebrating in the background. And 20 bonus seconds for Bellis, a dangerous sign for rivals like Samuel Sanchez

2nd for Priamo as Haedo badly falls away to 4th - passed by the charge of Aleksandar Flugel, managing to pick up some bonus seconds here that could later become important. Then its Gatto, who never really got going either, Rabon and Costa.
