Trainer
Eden95
I'm looking to buy a cycling windtrainer and am wondering if there is a specific brand or type or anything like that which I should look out for. (I know basically nothing about them). And what price range is best etc,

is it a windtrainer your looking for?
or a spin bike sort of thing?

A trainer, I'm not sure which one offers most resistance, low noise level etc. A fluid trainer, windtrainer, or magnetic trainer?

Well, i dont know too much about trainers but i have a spin bike, and its very quiet(but very heavy) and it offers a lot of resistance, i can turn it so that the wheel is like going up 30%.

Elite and Tacx are the most renowned I think. I have a Tacx Satori, and it's quite good.
It has a magnetic brake, with 10 difficulty levels, so it's not as noisy as the old Elite I had a dozen of years ago, which had a wind turbine to brake the thing. But using it is still very noisy (because you're breathing hard, because your bike makes noise, and there's no wind to cover it), don't expect to cycle in silence.
Don't forget to get a towel that you hang on the saddle tube and on the handle bar, because you're going to sweat hard (no wind to cool your body, once again), and to get a front wheel support block, or you'll be in a descent all the way. Pfft

Thanks, and also with the fluid trainer I ended up buying I got a quick-release to go with it. After i've finished on the trainer and say, I wanted to go for a ride would I have to put the original quick release that came with the bike back or does it not matter?

Nah, it doesn't matter. I'm ridding with the trainer's quick release on now, I can't even be bothered to put the original one back in position (maybe I should, as it looks better).

Doesn't really matter. The quick release they give you is so you don't chew up your own. I would switch it out just because. If you are in Aus though, I would just ride outside. Trainers are unpleasant.

Ok fair enough, thanks for that though, appreciated Smile
I use it's raining or extremely windy, or if I just couldn't be bothered to actually ride. I do those Spinervals workouts, they're actually really good.

Yeah, not every quick release fits into a trainer. Some more or less fit. I remember falling from my trainer 4 years ago, I tried to remove my tee shirt and had the wrong quick release on.
Beat that.

Well mine doesn't so I had to swap them, AFTER un-knowingly attempting to hook my bike up to and tighten it to the trainer I decided to get on, and fell side-ways onto the tiles.

If you live in Aus, or America, you can buy the trainer than takes out your back wheel - connecting the frame onto the trainer as if the trainer was the rear wheel. The trainer has a rear cassette in built/that you can fit, so it removes the annoying process of wearing down your rear tyre, which suffers on the road more than the front anyway. Also helps reduce noise of the wheel turning.

Can't remember what it's called, the pros have used it, and annoyingly I can't buy it in the UK.

Indeed. I only found myself falling sideways with a tee shirt over my head, landing on the wall (if that makes sense) next to me, and hitting my left knee against that wall. More fear and laughters than pain though. I just had a major WTF moment when I felt the bike was "falling" whilst I could see nothing with the tee shirt I was removing. Pfft

edit : more seriously now, I have a problem with my Tacx Satori trainer at the moment. It doesn't seem to work. It's like there's only little grip between the tyre and the trainer, so as soon as I put some effort in, nothing happens, but it soon starts smelling burnt rubber.
I didn't change any setting since the last time it worked properly, and no screw has loosen or anything, so I don't get it.
Not much of a problem right now, as we're having very warm weather conditions these days (and I can cycle again Smile ), but I'll need to get this fixed soon.
