ProTour Rankings - 1st Update
SportingNonsense
5 Stage Race and 1 Monument down - its about time for a Rankings update!

And I guess Id better start by apologizing. So far the team rankings are lining up to be very close between all teams, all the way down the table ... except 1. Once again we have a dominant leader already established, and this season, it is Vesuvio-Accumalux, sorry about that!

Ben Swift won Qatar, and Frank Schleck won Tirreno, while Uran and Intxausti both won Mountain stages on their way to 2nd overall in Oman and Catalunya respectively. Vesuvio usually have a slow start - found in the relegation zone at this stage last year - and the good news ahead is that they are very much allergic to cobbles, so might not be scoring too much until Schleck returns at the Ardennes.

Taking up 2nd place are defending champions Sony Ericsson. Paris-Nice winner Yuri Trofimov obviously stands out here, but Pedraza, Ballan and Meyer have all scored at least 190 points each, and theres seems no danger yet of Sony Ericsson slipping down the rankings this season.

Into 3rd are Festina-Conec. Their manager wasnt happy with their season opening - despite still lying 10th going into Milan San Remo - but what followed was an unprecedented Monument dominance, taking 1st and 2nd with Ulissi and Pozzato - lifting Festina right back up to the top end of the table. Festina scored 520 points in MSR - a higher points haul than any team took in Oman, Tirreno, PNice and Catalunya, even those who won the GC there.

In 4th are Pearl Adidas, with Jan Bakelandts playing a strong role, but also benefiting from Petar Panayotov's great performance in Catalunya. They missed out on winning Tirreno-Adriatico by 1 second, but were still the top scoring team there, and with Bakelandts having now stepped up as a real rival to Frank Schleck, a lucrative season beckons.

Next are a team who havent exactly shown great bike handling skills so far, Jack Wolfskin, who have been hindered by a number of crashes to their leaders. Which makes it all the more impressive that they are still up in 5th. An ominous sign for everyone else, but perhaps also some frustration for the team, Gesink could well have won the Tour of Oman without a crash, and that would have probably put them into 2nd. The star so far then is Ruben Plaza, stepped up to do as well as possible in Oman, and also a good performance in Catalunya.

Pendleton's Twicer are the highest newcomers to the ProTour at the moment in 6th, a strong start to the year from Phillipe Gilbert in particular on his top flight return, and they are ahead of Team B&O. B&O match Vesuvio in number of GC wins - Pluchkin having taken Oman and Catalunya - but without Pluchkin, there have been but scraps, Edvald Boasson Hagen has had a really bad season so far.

8th are Wiggle - San Pellegrino. Milan San Remo was certainly a dissapointment for them, they expected better and were unlucky, but the team really went well in Tirreno-Adriatico. Simone Ponzi took 4th in GC, but was well supported - despite #2 Caruso crashing - in comfortably taking the teams classification there. Just behind them are mountains loving Santander - its no coincidence that their 2 main sources of points to date are the 2 races we have had involving mountains - while Milka - Vittel round out the top 10, Bewley having given them a strong base to work from in Qatar.

Nestle and Wikipedia take up the middle ground, but only 140 points separates 13th and 19th. With Domina Vacanze looking more likely to relegate with every race they miss, we are left with 3 active teams set to go down. Spyker, Carmeuse and Warner Bros are currently these 3 teams, but Webeffect arent far away, and Bacardi only moved off bottom thanks to a strong Milan SanRemo. Cafe de Colombia and UBS also right in the battle.

Racing successfully, more than once, is the key to topping the Individual Rankings at this early stage, as the Individual Rankings prove. Not that Aleksandr Pluchkin is an undeserving number 1, far from it! With GC wins in Oman and Catalunya, it is no surprise to see the Moldovan lead the way.

It took Pluchkin's 2nd victory in Catalunya for him to take the lead in the standings though, which up til then were led by Briton Ben Swift. His Tour of Qatar points score is the highest per race so far, and with another stage win in Paris-Nice, his victory count for the season is already up to 4. (3 stages, 1 GC).

Next up are 3 riders who, while not having won either of their races overall, have both scored well in two races nonetheless: Bakelandts, Tenorio and Gilbert. They are ahead of 3 of our race winners, Trofimov, Ulissi and Schleck, while two more double-racing Spaniards round out the Top 10: Plaza and Intxausti.

Chuffed to bits with that. Great start.

I'm actually higher then i expected, but i can't really be happy with Van Stayen. I mean, even Bagdonas scored more points then him so far.

Classics will be important though. Can't afford to lose much points there.

Top 10 is nice, but I will need a massive haul in the Vuelta to stay there.

Even though I didn't show up with top guns for every race (quite the opposite, really), I had hoped for a better placing than the current one.

It seems to be a good thing that Domina is absent this season. One relegation spot less to worry about Pfft

Café de Colombia are doing about how I expected. Should be fairly and squarely in the relegation places after the cobbled classics.

I'm placed about where I estimated my team would be right about now. So I'm happy about that.

The way I ended up there, on the other hand has been quite hilarious.

Underperformed horribly in the Qatar, but OK can live with that, since that was partly my own fault aswell.

Then going on to lose a lot of time on a flat stage in the Oman race, where Serpa was clearly among the better climbers. I had an expectation that he would be somewhere around 7th or 8th which seemed realistic. In the end it was only 12th, BUT he took a 3rd place on a stage and a 3rd in the mountains which gave an equal amount of points almost. Then Diego Ulissi crashed out in the Tirreno where he did pretty good otherwise, and only got 8th instead of 5th. That was a pointloss of some extend. And then the worst part was in the Paris-Nice where Pozzato crashed out and did absolutely nothing, while being one of the pre-race favorites. He should've scored a couple of hundred points there.

But then without any warnings my team overperforms HUGELY in the Milano - San Remo taking back the lost points, and then we are exactly where we wanted to be. Brilliant!

Now we have to claw back into Vesuvio, but in all fairness this is a gap we cannot close, as they are better in the hills, sprints and GC's... So we are now looking to keep a leash on Sony in the cobbles and hopefully get back fairly soon after.

Go Steurs!

Well, my fears of relegation have been softened a bit by this start but I never could've imagined Pearl Adidas would be this high in the rankings Shock

Well, Milka are doing a little bittle better than I excepted. Cobble classics will be crucial. Go Bewley!

Thought I would have been Top 5 here with two GC wins. I guess the lack of stage wins and Hagen's rather pathetic start has dragged the team down quite a bit. Luckily Keinath had the race of his life in P-N.

What are you going to do in the GT's btw niconico? Having no amazing sprinter, and Pluchkin already having raced 1/4? of his racedays. Are you going to put Keinath and Grivko in as your team leaders? Or will you use Boasson Hagen in order to hope for some stagewins?

Well Pluchkin is of course racing TdF and just like my first PT season I don't really have a Top 10 candidate in the other two. I am however starting Keinath in both the Giro and La Vuelta and he can Top 15-20 both of them and thus gaining me more points from those two races than ever the way I see it.

Hagen is not racing a Grand Tour, but I bring some strong stage win hunters in both Spain and Italy in Vanoverschelde, Klemme and Grivko etc.

Regarding Pluchkin I'm not at all worried about him having raced twice already after this start to the season. He "only" scored some 1400 points last season and he has half of that already from, as you are pointing out, a quarter of his race days. Add to that if he keeps this high level he's gonna have a career best TdF in regards of ranking points.

As I have said earlier this is a transition season and with riders like Pluchkin, Guldhammer, Keinath (who I'm gonna keep training), Arndt and Kwiatkowski I think I'm set for seasons to come Wink

I absolutely agree about the future... It was more about this season. I was wondering if you actually wanted Pluchkin to win all the small Tours instead of GT's at all Smile

He actually might be able to do that Pfft

Eventhough that might gain me more points, I sure would like to win Le Tour Smile
