The final stage! A downhill run in, but plenty of hills to split things up - and a potentially important late intermediate sprint. Trofimov leads Gesink by just 8 seconds, and Spilak by 24 seconds. Its a tough ask for anybody else to win the race but theres plenty of competition for other GC places, and the King of the Mountains competition is still to be decided.
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-0.jpg

An large group of 13 went away early, includign former KoM leader Kruopis.

This break is chased down though and instead a smaller group of 4: Lalouette, Cohnen, Ladagnous and Kirsch
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-1.jpg

Its important to note that not all riders have a blank slate in terms of King of the Mountains points. Spyker's Cohnen already has 28 points, thus trailing Bouet by only 22. It took some time for Cohnen to realise his opportunity here though!

KoM 1:i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.pngKirschi1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.pngLadagnousi1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.pngCohnen

Finally on the 3rd climb, the team got through to Cohnen and he went for the points.

KoM 3:i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.pngCohneni1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.pngKirschi1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ubs.pngLalouette

Taking him to 60 points, and the King of the Mountains jersey.

Now to the final climb of the race. The break within touching distance, and taking no chances, Trofimov attacks first. Schumacher follows
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-3.jpg

It takes Sinkewitz, Spilak, Di Luca, Velits and Kashechkin before Gesink responds
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-4.jpg

And attacking first turns out to be key. Trofimov and Schumacher reach the top first, with Schumacher taking the points and moving into a small gap
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-5.jpg

Spilak crossed 3rd

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/jackwolfskin.pngChavanel

The intermediate sprint is ahead. And Trofimov uses it to sprint back up to Schumacher and pass him. 6 important seconds, extending his lead on Gesink to 14. 2 seconds also for Spilak, who is now 14 seconds the other side of Gesink.

Time bonuses may not matter though. As Spilak closes on the front 2, Gesink's group is now 1'20 back
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-8.jpg

Sure enough, Spilak catches Trofimov and Schumacher
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-9.jpg

At this stage Gesink is another minute back, but reduces 20 seconds in a kilometre as he chases solo, in turn 30 seconds ahead of a large 23 man group
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-10.jpg

Theres simply no urgency with the leaders - despite the chance to gain on Gesink, and the Dutchman soon bridges across to them
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-11.jpg

This means the Top 4 in GC are all together ahead of the peloton. As if they needed any less of a motive! Back they go to the chasing group.
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-12.jpg

With 6km to go then, it seems any chance of notable gaps has gone, with this downhill run in to the finish. It might suit Pozzato, but again he is missing - shocking race for him. Ventoso however, is here. Pozzato isnt the only rider missing though. 7th overall Sicard, 11th overall Rogers and 15th overall Kangert are all with Pozzato about 2 minutes down
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-13.jpg

With 3 and a half km to go, Chavanel sets the pace, while Trofimov on his wheel, Gesink and Spilak behind him - but shaking things up, Zabriskie attacks and gets a small gap into the sprint
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-14.jpg

Trofimov, Chavanel and Gesink independtly lead the chase. With Schumacher, Ventoso, Van Garderen and Spilak lined up on Trofimov's wheel
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-15.jpg

Approaching the final kilometre, Trofimov leads the way as Zabriskie is about to be caught
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-16.jpg

Ventoso is fell placed, but misses the jump of Van Garderen as the American swoops past Trofimov
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-17.jpg

Fnally Ventoso does make his move from Schumacher's wheel and is slightly faster (a couple of kph), but the World champion leads, with Spilak also looking for a way through
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-18.jpg

Spilak, Schumacher and Ventoso all gain on Van Garderen ... Photo finish!
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-19.jpg

Tejay Van Garderen wins the stage! 2nd for Spilak - not quite enough to see him past Gesink - 3rd for Schumacher, Ventoso 4th.
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-20.jpg

For Trofimov, 5th is enough to secure overall victory and the points jersey.
i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/pnices8-21.jpg

Cohnen is the King of the Mountains, while Van Garderen falls 3 seconds short of Keinath, the Young riders jersey a great result for the B&O rider. Warner Brothers take the team prize.
