Tour of Oman - Stage 7
Smowz
After two decisive days in Oman, we still have one last day for the riders to get through.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Aleksandr Pluchkin
leads
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Rigoberto Úran
by a solitary second. It doesn't look like today's parcours will change anything. In fact the battle will most likely be between the sprinters who will be looking for the stage win and possibly targetting the points jersey. The standings there are:

Though the sprinters teams will need to watch attacks late on which is how Tennant took stage 4.

The early climb is only one of two KoM points in the race, the other being the Green Mountain and carrying a lot more points than the short but steep one today. This means that it will only give the winner a small boost in that competition, but points it does gain it was a Warner Brothers rider who grabbed them.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/1-5menburstclearearlyon.png

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/warnerbros.png Mauro Facci
took the maximum points here, which will give his threadbare squad some cheer although we have to be honest the team based around Simon Spilak will struggle this season. He is joined by
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png William Walker
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.png Niels Scheunemann
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bacardi.png Gediminas Bagdonas
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/nestle.png Hernâni Broco

With Walker taking second on the climn and Scheunemann third.

Following the climb another 11 riders bridge across:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png Jesus Tendero
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Daan Rijntjes, Ramunas Navardauskas
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pendletons.png Steven Cummings
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Viktor Renäng
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ubs.png Thomas Frei

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Chris Froome

None of them bother to contest the only intermediate sprint.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/3-firstsprint.jpg

For the record Bagdonas takes it ahead of Walker and Facci, also the morale in the break is low as this move isn't working with the repeated riders bridging across from the peleton. The final death knoll is when
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/webeffect.png Abolfazl Gilanipoor
tries to bridge across and only succeeds in pulling it back together.

The attacking continues though and finally a group of five prises out that magic minute.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/4-fivemoveclearnow.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Ramunas Navardauskas

make up this promising move and whilst more riders attack one by one to get across.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/5-Acouplemoreriderslikethelookofthis.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/spyker.png Niels Scheunemann

The peloton do not see any sort of threat from them and so a breakaway of 10 riders formed. Possibly if they are allowed a bit of space riders like Froome (46th at 16.16) and Walker (58th at 17.75) can move forwards a bit. But with 60km to go and the lead only 4.45 we can see a sprinters team hammering at the front.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/6-NoworneverforRoelandts.jpg

It is Carmeuse - Bouygues Telecom who have formed an alliance with Wiggle San Pellegrino to chase this. Both teams have been active trying to set up their sprinters Roelandts and Rowe, but have not yet succeeded so today is their last chance. They steadily reduce the gap on the final circuits so that we are down to a minute with the last 12.5km lap to go.

We can see up the final straight away here and what faces the sprinters by looking over the shoulder of Tendero in the breakaway.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/7-Itsaslightuphillfinish.jpg

It looks like a slight climb, so should suit the most powerful sprinters though it is probably important not to launch too early, Van Heerden take note! It is Carmuese instead of Wikipedia who are doing the bulk of the grunt work.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/8-OnelaptogoatourdeforcebyCarmuese.jpg

But after the catch with 7.5 km to go, it is Wikipedia who have completely taken over by the 4km to go mark.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/9-Wikisiezecontrolhowever.jpg

The Wiki four man train then is
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Danny Pate, Jimmy Caspar, Tyler Farrar and Jaan Van Heerden
Followed sort of by
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/festina.png Anthony Lavoine
and
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/sonyericson.png Cameron Meyer

on the left of them we have the Wiggle train of:
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Vladimir Bileka
and
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wiggle.png Matt Rowe
Carmuese are waiting in the wings with
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/carmeuse.png Sven Vandousselaere, Alexandre Aulas and Jurgen Roelandts
with
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/santander.png Óscar Guerao
and
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/colombia.png Jaime Alberto Castañeda
following.

Wikipedia are determined to keep control but the other sprinters are making their life difficult as Farrar is nudged out of the train.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/10-Farrarnudgedout.jpg

Bileka and Rowe see themselves getting nudged out also but as they round the next bend the Ukrainian moves Rowe up nicely.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/11-Casparleadsemround.jpg

Suddenly Santanders Guerao is losing Meyers wheel , Farrar meanwhile is fighting to get back in front of Van Heerden.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/12-Guareohasalongwaytocomeback.jpg

As Caspar pulls away with 1500m to go stage 1 and 2 winners Mayer and Lavoine appear perfectly poised.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/13-Alltoplayfor.jpg

Guerao makes a quick burst up the right hand side as Rowe tracks Meyer. Under the kite it looks like six riders (Van Heerden, Farrar, Lavoine, Meyer, Guerao and Rowe) have pulled clear.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/14-UnderthekiteVHlaunches.jpg

Farrar drops back baulking Guerao slightly as Van Heerden launches his big push with 800m to go, it looks like Lavoine and Rowe will be his main challengers but a man in blue has made a huge kick.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/15-Roelandtscomingbackfast.jpg

Jurgen Roelandts has found his top gear at last and is closing rapidly, also coming back down this final straight is Guerao on the inside of Lavoine.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/16-VHneedsanothergear.jpg

It's clear Van Heerden needs another kick, but he is helpless as Roelandts comes steaming past.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/17-Roelandtsislookingsofasthere.jpg

As he approaches the line he is looking in the crowd for his team boss.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/MG20121/18-Whosthedaddy.jpg

'Will you pay me now?' he asks!

Guerao again showing a big acceleration comes past Van Heerden, who once again seemed to make his move too early. Perhaps he doesn't have it to win at this level?

Drujon of Focused, a team showing some of their promise in Oman it has to be said, comes very late to snatch 4th ahead of fellow late mover Castanada. Rowe is 6th, Lavoine 7th and Meyer just about holds on to his points jersey with an unconvincing 8th.
