Tour Meditteraneen Stage 5
mb2612
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med005.jpg
Stage 5 and this will be decisive. Di Maggio took control yesterday with an exellently timed atttack, but Ginanni and Bellis have both shown strength, while Vanendert and Roy can't be ruled out, other possibles are Kessler and Kolobnev
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med094.jpg

Today will also decide the Mountains jersey, but Venchi have no interest in letting anyone getting away up the first hill
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med095.jpg

Sestilli, Di Maggio, Garbelli si the order over the top but more importantly
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med096.jpg

There's been a massive split, with Kolobnev, Vanendert and Kessler all missing out
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med097.jpg

A group of 27 lead over the rest, with 6 Cerne riders in the middle
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med098.jpg

Kolobnev is panicing and doing the work himself.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med099.jpg

Although Kessler and Vanendert have it worse, as they are in the group behind Kolobnev, over 2 minutes behind the leaders
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med100.jpg

As we are about to start the second climb it all comes back together, it's definitely a sign of weakness for those involved though
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med101.jpg

5 riders get clear simultaniously: Schillenger, Sousa, Kirsch, Beyer and Van Zandbeek. Teklit is chasing themm solo
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med102.jpg

It's clear Schillenger wants the mountains jersey, and his attack at the top throws him into it provisionally, Teklit joins over the top
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med103.jpg

By the end of the climb the peelton had taken it so easy the the breaks lead was up to 7 minutes and they have to start chasing
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med104.jpg

55km to go and the gap is at 4 minutes, Appleby and Cardoso spice things up with an attack
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med105.jpg

Roy attacks with 25km to go and gets a small gap
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med106.jpg

The break hit the tours penultimate climb a minute ahead of the 3 chasers, with the peleton 30 seconds further back
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med107.jpg

The 13% gradients are vicious and within a km the peleton has lost another 30 seconds due to no one wanting to put in the effort
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med108.jpg

Roy is giving it everything and he cracks Cardoso
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med109.jpg

The pace is high enough in the peleton that 6 riders get clear: Ruijgh, Kolobnev, DI Maggio, Eltink, Richardson and Hesjedal
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med110.jpg

Up front 8 riders are together, Roy and Appleby both have teammates to help them, is this a tactical masterstroke?
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med111.jpg

Richardson cracks, while Ginanni attacks to try and get acroos to the 5 chasers

In fact he pushes past them
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med112.jpg

Ginanni catches Cardoso
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med113.jpg

As he catches the leaders Roy and Appleby push clear again
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med114.jpg

Di Maggio has almost pulled up the other chasers as well, Konovalovas has joined them
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med115.jpg

So, over the top with 13 km to go, first is Roy
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med117.jpg

Appleby is 25 seconds behind him
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med119.jpg

the two chase groups have merged, with Ginanni and Di Maggio at the front
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med120.jpg

Petrov leads the peleton, 1'30" behind Roy
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med121.jpg

Ginanni pulls Appleby back
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med123.jpg

Mount Faron starts with Roy 30 seconds ahead
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med124.jpg

Ginanni immediately ups the pace again, while Bellis and Richardson have managed to join this group
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med127.jpg

Ginanni drops everyone except Di Maggio
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med121.jpg

Kolobnev, Hesjedal and Sousa have also gone clear of the rest
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med128.jpg

As the road kicks up again Kolobnev manages to pull himself back
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med129.jpg

Roy has a look of steely determination in his eyes as he digs deep in this 10% section
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med130.jpg

Bellis pulls a few more riders back, Ginanni seeems to be running out of steam
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med131.jpg

As I say that Kolobnev starts to crack
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med133.jpg

And the gap grows rapidly, Kolobnev looks for someone else to do the work
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med135.jpg

Richardson moves forwards to control it
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med136.jpg

Up front Roy has extended his lead to 40 seconds, he's now just 17 seconds off overall victory
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med133.jpg

Ginanni is hurting now as Bellis pulls the two back, Roy's out of sight. DI Maggio needs to do something now
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med137.jpg

As the gap moves towards the minute mark Di Maggio takes over, immediately the lead group drops to 7: Di Maggio, Ginanni, Bellis, Richardson, Hesjedal, Kolobnev and Konovalovas
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med138.jpg

13% gradients and Ginanni kicks clear, just 1700m to go now
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med139.jpg

Di Maggio tries to respond but he lets a gap grow
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med140.jpg

Ginanni trys to close the gap on Roy, who is still dreaming of yellow
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med141.jpg

1km to go and it's all coming together at the front
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med142.jpg

Di Maggio is desperately sprinting to close the gap on Roy
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med143.jpg

It's to late for the stage, as ROy celebrates, the overall is another matter though
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med144.jpg

27 seconds later Ginanni crosses the line.
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med145.jpg

This means that Roy needs 45 seconds on Di Maggio for the overall victory

As Di Maggio crosses the line the clocks still showing 34 seconds, Di Maggio has victory
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med146.jpg

Bellis solos in 4th almost 2 minutes back
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med147.jpg

then a group of 4: Richardson, Hesjedal, kolobnev and Konovalovas
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med148.jpg

Vanendert is 9th
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med149.jpg

Ruijgh is tenth with Appleby, Eltink and Sousa just behind him. Sousa was in the break as well!
i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z334/mb1226/Med%202012/med150.jpg

So Di Maggio wins the overall, Roy gets an excellent second after a brilliantly agressive ride, while Ginanni has to settle for 3rd and Bellis gets the points jersey
