Tour of Wellington - Stage 1
untal
We start this Kiwi race with a flat stage. It's one of the three chances the sprinters have.

Novak (Rothaus) and Jungels (Focus) attacked during Rimukara Hill and they have gap that allows them to fight for KOM sprint. The Czech rider is the first on the hill top.

In the descent, Novak and Jungels are caught by a 37 men group. Some favourites are on the right side of the split!
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/Man-Game%20Wellington/PCM0002.jpg

There is no clear chase by a 49 men peloton that chases the front group.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/Man-Game%20Wellington/PCM0003.jpg

In this late group, there are riders such as:

Gasparotto (Puma)
Hermans (Rothaus)
B. Feillu (Focus)

Even far behind, there are riders like Zaballa (CSC). This may be a decisve move!

But, a few kilometers later, the second group catches the first, thanks to Oz and Puma and later Zaballa's group would catch the peloton.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/Man-Game%20Wellington/PCM0004.jpg

Immediately, Le Gac (Puma) attacks.

Gate (Oz) quickly bridges the gap.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/Man-Game%20Wellington/PCM0006.jpg

Gate beats the French in the first intermediate sprint and Romain Feillu does some effort to be third.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/Man-Game%20Wellington/PCM0007.jpg

Gate would also beat Le Gac in the second. Maksimov gets two points and two bonus seconds for being third.

Le Gac attacks to be the first in KOM sprint, as VW and Rapha Condor relay in the pack. 2'30'' with 32kms to go.

Now is Bpost that relays as we go through the 10kms to go banner. 40 seconds separate the breakaway from the peloton.

The escapees are caught with 5kms to go. Bpost has a train with Stenuit, Stallaert and Van Loocke. Kennaugh and Wegmman grab the ride.

Also, Feillu, Gasparotto, Giaux, Forster, Cucinotta, Maksimov and Rizza follow the train, by this order.

3kms to go and Stallaert starts to sprint!

Van Loocke is now in the front with 1500 meters left to ride.

Van Loocke can't match Wegmann who blasts past the Belgian!
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/Man-Game%20Wellington/PCM0015.jpg

Feillu closes on Wegmann. Gasparotto and Kennaugh are also trying to get to the front. 700 meters!
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/Man-Game%20Wellington/PCM0016.jpg

300 meters! Wegmann and Feillu are side-by-side and Kennaugh grinds his teeth!
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/Man-Game%20Wellington/PCM0017.jpg

Kennaugh wins the stage! Superb late effort. Feillu is second and Wegmann tried to surprise but ended just in third.
